Simon Schama, a brilliant British historian has tweeted a series of predictions on what he thinks we can expect to see happen, based on his intimate knowledge of history (and if anyone would know this stuff, it's this guy). He says the playbook for fascists (of which Drumpf is definitely one--or maybe more accurately, a wannabe fascist in training) is pretty standard, so look for these things to happen.
1. Nov 9th: "stab in the back theory" (standard for fascists), Drumpf will accuse GOP leadership of betrayal and his civil war on the right begins.
2. By inauguration day 2017: Drumpf's fascists will have established "The American Party" to which 20 or so House members will gravitate. Chaos.
3. A yuge chasm opens up between The American Party and its rank and file and almost all traditional GOP support: business, especially.
4. Spring 2017: Fascist in chief establishes Trump Media to do for The American Party what Murdoch's Fox did for GOP, Roger Ailes at its head.
5. Inaugurating Trump News, Trumpolini speaks of "fraud" of the election, reiterates "stab in the back", says "it's just the beginning."
6. May 2017: As Merrick Garland hearings open in Dem controlled Senate, Trump asks "Second Amendment people" to do ..something.
7. June 2017: Polls show that one in three don't accept HRC as legitimately elected President. American Party holds first conference: flags, guns.
I hope I'm wrong.

(50,986 posts)Trump has already marked off no. 1 on the list. Ryan's a loser, McCain is a foul-mouthed coward, the Republicans are all turncoats, etc.
A split in the Republican Party may happen. It may already have happened, if not officially declared. I certainly don't have the notion that Reince Priebus knows how to unite the disparate factions of his party. They seem as remote from each other as ever.
A Trump Media? I could see it Breitbarting its way onto the airwaves.

(111,352 posts)Ailes is morbidly obese and 76. He'll be bogged down in lawsuits. Someone else will have to head Drumpf Propaganda Central.
Actually, Drumpf himself isn't in the best of health. While he's likely to poison the near future, the prognosis for more than a couple of years isn't that great. He's deteriorating mentally as it is and when it can't be glossed over even for morons, there will be a power vacuum that they will fight each other over for a decade or more, by which time the whole country will have moved on to something completely different. Uday and Qusay will fight each other, of course, neither of them possessing the charisma of the old man and being acceptable to the rank and file.
Short term, it will be unpleasant for anyone who gets within yelling distance of one of Trump's Chumps. However, he's too damned old and he's deteriorating and won't be a long term threat.

(30,764 posts)Trump is losing his empire. Fewer people are staying in his hotels and using his golf courses. If his children are going to fight anything, it will be each other. They will have to figure out how to keep the money rolling in. They are just as much poison as the old man.

(11,619 posts)Any nominee who is not approved by the end of the Congress would have to be re-nominated by the new President. Garland made sense in a Republican Majority. He was well known, and had bee approved by a supermajority of Senators already.

(16,423 posts)The true Tea Party voters were pillaged by republican pseudo-Tea Party PACs. "Send us $100 so we can support this Tea Party-candidate!" And then they maybe donated 1% to the Tea Party-candidate.
The Tea Party voters were bled dry and played for fools by the GOP establishment.
The same will happen to Trump's "America Party"-supporters: Trump will whip them up, suck out all their money... and then he will abandon them and retreat from the political stage to go back to entertainment.
Trump doesn't want political power, because political power is responsibility. He just wants the Presidency as a trophy, just like Romney.
He will "make America great again", someone else will do the job.

(50,562 posts)The Tea Party never established an actual party, and for good reason: if they would have run a Tea Party candidate against a GOP and a Democratic Party candidate, the two right-wing candidates would have split the conservative vote and put the Democrat in office. They accomplished their goals far more effectively by hijacking the GOP.
The Trump Party, or American Party or whatever you want to call it, would be an alt-right third party. It might be entertaining to watch; however, one election that drops 380 to 400 Democrats into the House and enables a Democratic sweep of the Senate races would be the straw that causes Priebus to break Trump's back.

(53,988 posts)He has a terrific piece called the "History of the Jews" which was on the BBC. The "stab in the back" was very popular with the Nazis blaming Jews for WWI. There are scores of propaganda posters with that 'theme'.

(21,056 posts)anyhow, my buddy was saying Dumdum will start TNC (Trump "News" Channel) or something to do with media after next year. My concern is these rabid crazies and their gunzzzzzz! Most all of us are for responsible gun ownership, but the most strict gun control laws possible and keeping them from the mentally ill, and the criminals. The gunz folks don't get that.

I say the Senate should FORCE Republicans to actually filibuster and ENOUGH of the "Unanimous Consent" crap where all it takes is ONE anonymous senator to block a floor vote.
No more childish tantrums.
If the Republicans hold onto the House due to gerrymandering expect Impeachment Hearings to start on day one and drag on for years.

(24,339 posts)Sometimes what they refuse unanimous consent for is mind boggling
I'm still trying to find out why Harry Reid is blocking a bill that would outlaw animal crush videos
27 Democrats are co-sponsors as are about a dozen Republicans
He refuses
That former Senator and former Major League pitcher from Kentucky did that a lot.
Even when the other 99 were in favor. It was like out of spite or something

(18,124 posts)except in civil society, not mentioned in this historians 'big picture', upticks in gender, race andd preference of life partner issue WIL BE a violent fact. How much of an uptick? Martial law is in my scenario. The internet with it's almost instantaneous connection capability, with every corner of this country, will galvanize these people.I hope I'm wrong.
