(17,505 posts)Or able to afford it. The mail is expensive! And really heavy.
And it may be a vintage '80s dress that she rented (or was given to wear) for the occasion. This happens all the time.

(28,394 posts)I googled it, but still not sure. Does it have metal threads and is it heavy?

(13,107 posts)This is an interesting mesh fabric.
Very fine (0.08mm) rustproof 316L Stainless Steel wire
is knitted with 40% polyester yarn to create a stretchy fabric
that is easy to touch and wash, but wears tough.

(50,559 posts)It's fine wire woven into polyester cloth. It doesn't LOOK all that heavy, but I can't imagine what it would take to sew on it.

(34,136 posts)That is what is used with many types of fabrics that could be damaged if a needle pierced a thread and pulled it.
Ballpoint Similar to a universal needle but has rounded edges and is not tapered the same way. Intended for closely knit fabrics where the rounded tip will push the weave out of the way rather than cut through it.

(17,505 posts)Depends on how wide the mail is made. In regular fabric 45" wide it might take 5 to 6 yards. Think at least 2 shoulder to floor lengths plus some extra for drape.
And some mail (mail means chain. so "chain mail" means "chain chain"...but...y'know....) is not woven into a fabric but is actually interlocked metal pieces. I hear some of Giani Versace's designs like this from the 80s (this may be one) weigh a lot.

(34,393 posts)for the Obamas. They have done us so proud in the face of such hatred and bigotry. I am so proud of them and so very ashamed of a lot of so-called "Americans." I am going to miss them so much.

(61,695 posts)It has such a smooth look. She's just gorgeous in it. Her figure is beautiful, too. It's not a standard hourglass, but she has a tiny waist that she gives the dress awesome curves. I like that she's tall, too.

Were Jews, but we identify as Italian, joked comedian Jerry Seinfeld. By way of explaining why the Obamas may have invited him and his wife, Jessica, Seinfeld said they spend a lot of time traveling in Italy and we almost exclusively go out for Italian food, but thats as far as I can figure.

(5,644 posts)There were a couple of dresses that I didn't care for but I think that she can wear the hell out of dresses/gowns.
My mother (r.i.p.) hated the dress that she wore 2008 election night.
