She was out front sweeping the front step when I pulled in the driveway this morning.
Loretta is 89 yrs old, 4'10", blue print dress & slippers. Waved me over & asked in her German accent if I was voting for "dat got-damn Daniel Trump?"
I said no & she grabbed my arm & said "he's a got-damned nazi!" Then turned to continue sweeping.
She's right..well except for the first name but she always makes me smile.

(9,148 posts)I gave her a couple Hillary stickers which she displayed on her fridge.
I love this spirited lady & yes she has some amazing stories of women's march to equality. Inch by inch.
Bless her generation.

(9,148 posts)Her daughter & other family do stop by several times a day to check on her, have coffee & bring her lunch or dinner.
She has a lady stop by to clean her house.
She will remain in the house as long as she is able and we all keep an eye on her.
She really is a treasure & it is evident as we all age that Loretta is part of a great & passing generation who valued democracy, built this nation, believed in community and educated & entertained themselves.
They thrived because their families left all they had to flee a future laid out for them by a madman like Donald Trump
Loretta stands with Hillary

(7,812 posts)Loretta is 89, and a good sweeper. Does she also have reliable transportation to her poling place? An absentee ballot? Social progress is in the details. And thanks for reporting to us on her spirit.

(9,148 posts)She takes her vote very seriously too.
Good to ask tho. I've volunteered as an election day driver for those in need. We aim to get as many voters to the polls as possible. Everyone gets a shot at defeating the Repubs this Nov.

(14,752 posts)she is registered to vote and has a ride.
My mother in law's family was forced to leave nazi germany in 1939 (she was 7) because of hitler. She doesn't have kind things to say about trump, even though she was a republican (they owned a small business in penn) for a lot of her life.
Just make sure these people vote. Let them consider it a vote against facism.

(4,033 posts)she has already voted, absentee. She lived through the Depression & WWII. She had 2 brothers and 3 uncles fighting in the South Pacific and Europe. She lost one Uncle who landed on D Day and died about 3 months later in Northern France.
Her father was born in Poznan, he hated the Germans & the Russians for what they did to Poland. Mom listened to the Radio, hearing Hitler's voice & her Dad interpreting it for her.
She nailed Trump the first time he opened his mouth.

(5,737 posts)Up until three months before she passed away, she was still the secretary/treasurer of the Democratic Party in the county she lived in. She took that position about a year after my dad died. Dad was a Republican, but he was an Eisenhower Republican and he hated Barry Goldwater. He did like Nixon, but Nixon was actually pretty good for working people and especially unions. Dad was a union coal miner.
Mom would have loved to have voted for Hillary. She would have muted the TV when Trump spoke.

(111,264 posts)I always got a real kick out of tough old folks when I was younger, used to talk to them whenever I had a free few minutes.
I was privileged to know one of the original Rockettes. She was a pistol, too. Hated Republicans.

(30,741 posts)have passed. They spoke like your neighbor, or they had strong Minnesota accents. They were all Democrats.
My grandma lived to be ninety-one. She used to call the first Bush president a butt-ass. Maybe that resembled some obscure German swear word, or maybe she was too much of a lady to use language that was any stronger.

(3,839 posts)She, in her younger days, was a rock ribbed Republican, a Rockefeller Republican. In 1979, I was born. In 1980, Reagan was elected and she told me she voted for him. Then she saw was Reagan was doing to "her only grandson's life and future," and instantly turned Blue until her death.
You don't argue with people over 80 years old. And you listen to them, because a lot of times, their age does give a good perspective on what is happening in the world. Or, as my grandmother would say, "I'm (enter age). Who's going to argue with me and who do I care to listen to anymore?"
Gotta love it when our grandparents and great grandparents swear about people. It's because they mean it! If "Daniel Trump" is a "got-damned nazi," then Daniel Trump is a Got-damned Nazi. I've learned old people tend to be a lot more honest because they know they are running out of time and don't have the time, patience or energy for bullshit.

(28,078 posts)I was out to visit her last Saturday and she met me at the door wearing a Hillary button and a donkey pin she bought back in the '60s. I gave her one of the "OMG GOP WTF" (and yes, she knows what it all means) buttons I got at the DFL booth at the state fair last summer and she added that to her collection saying "I suppose I'll have to be careful where I wear this one. - Maybe not to Mass." But she did wear it out to lunch.
