(62,444 posts)If that's how Trump expresses his love for Putin, there is nothing wrong with the sex. What's wrong is his love for Putin, not that Putin is of the same sex.

(62,444 posts)...between the two of them, other than by gay sex.
But the joke doesn't turn on them being both men.

(62,444 posts)Does the joke work with any combination of genders?
Yes, you'd have to change the article of clothing (a necklace perhaps) if Trump were female.
But it would still work if Trump were female.

(62,444 posts)The joke is about the passionate love that Trump has for Putin.
They both happen to be men.
What makes it funny is not the notion that they are gay, but the intensity of affection that Trump has for Putin.
There is nothing wrong with a man expressing physical affection for a man.
There is something wrong with a US presidential candidate expressing such attachment for a hostile dictator and his geopolitical ambitions.

(115,677 posts)That is homophobia

(62,444 posts)If Trump were female, it would work the same, changing necktie to necklace.
It can be expressed with any combination of gender, and does not turn on the fact they are both men.
(On edit: straight people have oral sex too)

(62,444 posts)The joke does not depend on the sex being gay or straight.
Yes, because Trump and Putin are both male, then it is sex between two men. But that's just an accident of this reality. In an alternate universe where Trump is a woman, the joke still works.
Sex is funny, no matter who is having it.

(9,527 posts)Of course given how homophobic the GOP is, I don't think the original joke is good either. Whether you want to admit it or not, our society has an association with being the one on their knees in that situation as being weaker, whether that's being gay or being a woman.
There are other ways to make your point about Trump being Putin's lapdog without at the very least toeing the line of a homophobic comment.

(62,444 posts)Thus defining the servile posture of Trump to Putin. That's the point.

(115,677 posts)It is homophobia, snerking at the thought of it. That is the problem.

I know you aren't GLBT, but an ally. There are more than a few that still think things like this are funny. There is a time and a place. Is it as horrible as tying us to a fence to die? Of course not, but it is one of those little "paper cuts" that so many think we "should get over it! It's just a joke!"

(115,677 posts)If the joke were Trump being hauled around piggyback, of even clinging to Putin's coattail, that'd be funny. But snerk, snerk, a man on another man's penis? Snerk snerk. As far as "it'd be just as funny it it were a woman", no.
At any rate, thank you for the explanation. I hope it is read by others.
Behind the Aegis
(53,962 posts)I was thinking more along the lines of the tie coming out the back of Putin's pants indicating Trump was kissing his ass would be actually funny. But, once again, we are the "butt" of the joke and then told, "it isn't about you!"

(5,764 posts)What would be the point in insulting someone by calling them gay, if there wasn't an element of contempt for homosexuality, generally? When you tell someone, "you suck" or "you're so gay", you're telling them they are contemptable and worthless. Telling a strait male he is gay or effeminate, is about the worst insult you can pay him. The homophobia and misogyny (the root of homophobia) are obvious to me.
