He is the absolute embodiment of the GOP "anti-responsibility" movement....and now he is pimping for O'Keefe?

They collectively deserve the humiliation and pain that is coming in 18 days now...

American polisci textbooks will surely note this campaign as the bookend on Nixon's southern strategy. the racist dickweeds, though relatively few in number, were numerous enough to eventually form a plurality within the Republican party that tried to absorb them and went on to post a delusional incompetent at the top of their presidential ticket. the fact that this complete incompetent turned out to be a sexual predator will hardly mitigate the splintering effect he has on the Republican party.

all of which will leave the Democrats in an unfamiliar position of unchallenged leadership...

The GOP could embrace denial - something they excel at - and pretend Trump was a fluke never to be repeated. So they continue on their merry way using the same old tactics that gave them Trump to begin with - all the while telling themselves and others that Trump was, somehow, not their doing.

Or - there is a split, as you suggest. Growing pains amidst destruction. Could get ugly. John Boehner would know firsthand, and really should have served as a cautionary tale to the rest of the GOP, yet somehow didn't.

It presents a golden opportunity for the Democratic Party either way.

We shall see.

if the establishment tries to run it again like it was 1980, they'll get the same quality of candidate to go up against incumbent Hillary in 2020. who will the crazies place on the sacrificial pyre? will it be Sarah Palin? David Duke? they need it to be Marco Rubio, but i wouldn't bet on that happening. not now. not anymore.

really, they're better off going their separate ways. the moderates will probably align with the ascendant Democratic party. the hardline conservatives who aren't total racists will form or merge with another party, leaving the tRump supporters holding up the centerpole in a mostly empty tent, the husk of the dead Republican party.

A right wing and a prayer.

We'll have a better idea as soon as the election is called. They'll waste little time getting their narrative out.

Now, if it sells is another story.

and he's still a piece of shit, but I will say that shit comes in all consistencies and a pile of Trump isn't quite the same as a pile of Reagan.

Trump is the poop in the commercials where kids do their business anywhere but the toilet - a mess to clean up for the party. Reagan is the commercial where the kid does his first poop in the toilet and the party claps. It's all still shit but you see the difference.

Sorry for being crude, but we are talking Trump and Reagan.

It isn't the Democrats fault that all your nominees, except perhaps for one, were completely unhinged.

This is what the republican party is today
