Isn't the GOPs biggest 2016 mistake...?

Allowing the field of candidates to be so large in the first place? Especially when it came to the national TV debates?

Not a great move by the party because - no candidate would have chance to say much in this format...kind of pointless. And as we now know...risky!

The large field gave Trump the perfect vehicle to basically zing people out of the race - like a bad late night comedian.

The others that remained were damaged goods.

I think the first debate was 10 main candidates, and still more sidecar debate candidates. Way to fragmented for anyone to create a message or contrast...other than Trump, who was just doing schtick - and managed to make himself the headline.

The first debate - at max, should have been Bush, Christie, Cruz, Kasich, Rubio and Trump. (How they would make this determination...I do not know! They seem like the only ones who had a chance at national attention)

That would have forced Trump into having to say more - of substance - and not just zing people. And, given the other candidates time to make their own case.

I think this big field was a huge error - and I bet we won't see it happen again - on either side!

The goops have shown a marked incapability to learn from their own mistakes. Usually they seem to just double down on them. These are non thinking, short sighted folks. Thank God.

That twisted thinking should keep them out of the driver's seat for generations.

the goopers put up a candidate that wasn't a blithering idiot?

I would guess, maybe, HW? Eisenhower?

I mean, really think about it.
Nixon was off his meds.
Ford, well...
Then, Reagan the puppet.
As I said, HW Bush, still, a crooked SOB.
Dole, laughable.
Then came * the appointed fool. Twice.
As if the former crew wasn't bad enough: McCain/Palin(why separate the two).
Lastly, Mr. personality: rMoney and Ryan(the smartest guy in the GOP?).

The big question I can't seem to rationalize: Why are these races even close?

(I know the answer, I'm from Missouri)

8. One of Nixon's many tragedies is that he was a really brilliant man.

But he was too insecure, too paranoid, and too focussed on avenging real or imagined slights to ever use his brilliance effectively, and for the good of the country.

If he had been a liberal, he could have been a huge national asset.

and led everyone to believe he would be.

Yet, he used his power and position for bad things.
He invaded a sovereign nation w/o due process.
And much else.
He didn't deserve to be president.

Must be a repug thing.

Primaries were trump personally attacking his opponent out of the race. The republican candidates who were focused on issues were obviously not successful.

and they all had something of a shot
and it should be remembered that carter and bill clinton were not household names in the beginning of the process.

what i feel happened is that trump was able to motivate a block of voters who were or are outside of the gop to
glom onto the gop and take it over. trump is a republican by convenience not tradition.... He could have run as a dem but
perhaps felt an easier path in the gop.
bernie could be seen as a similar candidate on the dem side. Bernie was way more closely aligned with the dems so a take over would not have been as disastrous, but as a long time county party leader who ran the local bernie caucus....Bernie brought out folks who were totally new to our local party...like not on any mailing list we had ever seen. it was kinda funny...the hrc group was made up of traditional dem members....hrc won

the mistake the gop made in my eyes is not to integrate the block of trump voters better into traditional gop structure. they became the tail that wags the dog. the allegiance is to trump not to the elephant.
the challenge to the gop is to decide if they want to change to morph them into the party or to take their marbles and put them on the outside once again
