This may have been common knowledge in some corners, but it is news to me. I always wondered why he stayed at that sewer.
Shep Smith comes out as gay and denies that 'loving' Roger Ailes stopped him from revealing his sexuality as he speaks out about Fox News sex harassment scandal
Shepard Smith has publicly come out as a gay man in a new interview
Smith, 52, spoke about his sexuality when asked if a report from 2013 claiming that Roger Ailes prevented him from coming out was true
'That's not true. He was as nice as he could be to me. I loved him like a father,' said Smith of Ailes
The popular Fox News anchor also spoke about the pain he felt in the wake of the network's recent sexual harassment scandal
'This place has its enemies, but inside, it was very personal, and very scarring and horrifying,' said Smith

(135,425 posts)Why in the world did he stay there? You'd think he would have jumped to another network. How good can the pay be, and no matter what he says, why does this announcement FOLLOW the departure of Ailes?
Hmmm.
FWIW, I'm not thinking in terms of sexual harassment, necessarily. I'm thinking more in terms of blackmail and/or some kind of smear job--but who knows. All I know is that asshole Ailes "enforced his will" for way too long at that network.

At least in Smith's case, I understand it was a good job and that's pretty important to a person trying to build a career in journalism.
I had thought he was out years ago, but maybe I'm thinking of somebody else. Anyway, this will be a test of Faux. It seems to me they are distinctly different now that Ailes is gone. There have been rumors all along that Murdoch's sons wanted to get this reckless network under control, and maybe we are seeing some of that happen now.
I'll believe it when they toss Hannity and O'Reilly overboard. They have an important strategic decision ahead. They obviously have a large viewer base, mostly of scared, old white men. This isn't exactly a prized demographic, except at election time. With Trump likely to mount a challenge from the KKK-Alt-Right, Faux will have to decide a course.
1) Do they try to be just as crazy as the Trump/Breitbart/Drudge/AlexJones network, trying to keep most of that scared old white men base in place?
2) Or do they try to become a more legitimate, but still more conservative than CNN network, aligning with the Paul Ryan part of the GOP?
I don't see how they can have it both ways. And in either case, the role of Faux will be diminished, which must be a good thing.
