Am I being silly?

My 11 year old daughter has a few days off from school November 10-11, so I put in for vacation time and thought it might be fun to go for a local mother daughter trip somewhere. We settled on Washington DC. She hasn't been since she was a toddler.

As I was looking into hotels , it occurred to me that we'd be going 2 days after the election.

On the one hand, it might be a supper cool moment to be in DC. On the other, if some disgruntled nut job decided that the election outcome warrants 2nd amendment remedies, seems like the tourist spots in DC would make attractive targets.

Maybe we will opt for Baltimore's inner harbor instead.

Am I ridiculous?

DC is a great place to visit and I can't imagine any dumb terrorist targeting the really good stuff like the Smithsonian or National Gallery.

The best revenge against sore losers is ignoring them and living life the way you want to.

I haven't actually voted in 19 years because I always bring my kids into the voting booth with me and they cast the vote for me.

My son voted for Obama (and Kerry and Gore) and my daughter voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary.

I have to ask the election officials if it's ok to snap a picture.

We were in DC during July 4th celebrations, that was a far bigger target than a few days after the election.

If you are visiting any government buildings, capitol, white house or any other, the security is very high. The Smithsonian museums are also protected with bag checks and metal detectors. If you stay in the museum/ government zone of DC and don't venture out, it is very safe.
We visit all the time and have never had a problem.

Enjoy your trip.

Here's a personal story:

In 1976 I was living in the DC area, and made up my mind to go down to the Mall on July 4th. My older brother, who also lived in the area initially scoffed, said I was foolish to even consider it, because there were bound to be riots and violence that day. I told him flat out he was wrong.

As that date drew near, he apparently changed his mind, and he, his wife, and their two children went to the Mall that day. We were able to meet up and watch the fireworks together.

Need I point out there were no riots?

Just as there won't be anything bad happening when you and your daughter will be there. Have a fabulous time.

Oh, and as a further note, I'm planning to attend our country's 250th, on July 4, 2026. I'll be telling everyone I see that I was there fifty years earlier.

much more concerned about areas without the capacity to deal with homegrown wackos. I had a friend whose plan to live through Vietnam was to volunteer so he could chose his job and then get attached to the most expensive and necessary piece of equipment the Army had. It worked. The lesson there I guess is if anything starts going down get as close to the President's location as you can. That is where all the security will be.

I won't use the term "silly," but there are very many things more statistically likely.

I was not far from Nice when that guy drove a truck through a crowd. Now, there were thousands of people in that crowd. Even if I was in that crowd, the chances of being hurt were low. But even being miles away, and even though nobody in France was freaking out, I received an avalanche of messages from people in the US asking if I was okay.

There are thousands and thousands of tourists in DC on any given day. The odds of being in the right place at the right time - even if someone where to do some random shooting - are very low. People are shot in DC just about every day under normal circumstances.

However, some 35,000 people die in auto accidents each year - a little under 100 every day. Are you concerned about driving?

If yes, we will take he train. If no, we will drive and bring the dog. (My friend has a town house near the White House that she is lending us, and dogs are welcome.)

My son was on his way the the holocaust museum for a class trip. the morning that nazi opened fire and killed a guard. They were 10 minutes away when the bus driver got a message to stop the bus.

It was a tense 15-20 minutes waiting on word that th kids weee all ok.

I can't recall if any visitors were hurt in that one, but whether one is a mile away or a thousand miles away, the result is the same.

With 4779 violent crimes so far this year, you will be within a few miles of a violent crime being committed. That is certain.

Year to date stats from MPDC indicate there have been 4779 violent crimes so far this year in DC.

If that does not bother you, then some extremely less likely event should not.

I'm spending the week before that in Alexandria. My husband will be taking the Metro into DC while I am busy and spending his time at different Smithsonian venues around the National Mall. I get two days I can go into DC with him at the end of my seminar, then we'll get on the train the day after the election to come home.

The thought of any blowback after the election never entered our minds. We should all be safe.

I'm hoping it will be a party train the whole way celebrating the election of Madame President Hillary Rodham Clinton!
