In kindergarten, it was a special privilege to hold the flag while we all formed a circle to recite the pledge.

So, I would look across the circle and mirror what the kids on the other side were doing, and would end up using my left hand instead of my right hand. The teacher tried a variety of techniques - spinning me around, etc. - to get the point across that if I was facing them, then "my right" was the opposite of "their right". I had a devil of a time figuring out why everyone's "right" seemed to be specific to them. So, I have always had a problem immediately knowing which is "left" and which is "right

It wasn't until later as a child that I was in an accident which left me with a large and prominent scar on the back of my left hand.

I'm in my 50's, and if someone says "left" or "right" I still have to discreetly glance at the back of my hand to be sure, because I became so dependent on doing that.

That picture reminds me of being repeatedly humiliated over that.

This is Ainsley. She is 5. During Princess Week at her dance class she decided she would rather dress as a hot dog.



What makes a hero?

Bravery? Dedication? The willingness to stand up for your beliefs at the risk of ridicule?

Ainsley Turner displayed all three on May 9, when she showed up at North Carolina’s Holly Springs School of Dance "Princess Day" dressed as a hot dog.
