(47,675 posts)4. My late FIL grew up in NW PA and was a "bigot" until he visited my soon-to-be wife in SC.
She was teaching kindergarten there in a very rural area. He had been an art teacher and gave an art lesson to her class. At one point it dawned on him that all of the children were black. That cured his ignorance. In sharp contrast, the only white child in her class only showed up about every three days because, as his grandmother so eloquently put it, "he's afraid of the black children." Gee. I WONDER where that "fear" came from.
