Once it was a thriving town of 20,000 people who worked at places like Burgess battery, Illinois Central Railroad, Raleigh Chemical, Fairbanks Morse, Kelly Tire and other high paying jobs. Most of our families had one bread winner and the moms were able to stay home comfortably.

It was a wonderful place to grow up. It was safe, there were lots of parks and recreation, great neighbors and time to indulge in hobbies and sports.

Times sure have changed and Freeport had to change with it. I still love Freeport and go back every so often and it angers me to see the way it and other towns have been treated by successive generations of greedy vultures- all in the name of profits.

I think one of the reasons I despise unbridled capitalism and our system of governance such as it is, is the destruction wrought by people of Romney's ilk and those enablers that came before him, much like plundering Vikings or economic Tecumseh Shermans pursuing their "scorched earth policies" leaving nothing viable in their wakes.

One only needs to look at Freeport, (and if you're old enough) remember what once was, what was destroyed and what little of the good life is left for those of us in the non investor class.
