Dozens of buildings sustained "substantial damage" after a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck an Oklahoma town that's home to one of the world's key oil hubs, but officials said Monday that no damage has been reported at the oil terminal.
Cushing City Manager Steve Spears said 40 to 50 buildings were damaged in Sunday's earthquake, which was the third in Oklahoma this year with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater. No major injuries have been reported, and Spears said the damage included cracks to buildings and fallen bricks and facades.
Oklahoma has had thousands of earthquakes in recent years, with nearly all traced to the underground injection of wastewater left over from oil and gas production. Sunday's quake was centered 1 mile west of Cushing and about 25 miles south of where a magnitude 4.3 quake forced a shutdown of several wells last week. Some longtime Cushing residents said Monday they've become accustomed to the unsettled ground beneath their feet. Others shrugged it off as a cost of doing business living next to an oil hub.
Fearing aftershocks, police cordoned off older parts of the city about 50 miles northeast of Oklahoma City to keep gawkers away late Sunday, and geologists confirmed that several small quakes have rumbled the area. Spears said an assisted living community had been evacuated after damage was reported. The Cushing Public School District canceled Monday classes.

(1,384 posts)They have a choice to make. Fracking and the jobs that it provides, or their lives. It's a stark choice, but if this doesn't wake them up nothing will.

(15,805 posts)the accumulated effects of multiple small quakes can topple a building just as well as one major quake. That state probably doesn't have the heavy duty building codes as we do, leaving any structure unsafe after an earthquake. The structural damage caused is not always visible, but it still there, hidden within the walls, attics and foundations, weakening the facades and masonry work.

(111,339 posts)A lot of the wells are pumping a mixture of oil or gas and briny water. After they separate, the oil or gas is pumped off and the water is put back into the ground well below the aquifer but into a layer of rock that is full of hidden faults. That's where all the quakes are coming from in most of OK, waste water injection wells. Elsewhere, they can be due to fracking.
So far, people in the area think picking their pictures off the floor a few times a week is worth the good paying jobs.

(15,806 posts)specifically Weld County, we have over 21000 wells. Those in positions of authority, 99.9% republican, are so enamored of fracking money that they allowed wells within Greeley's city limits. There is no neighborhood, no hospital, no school, no park, no playground, no water supply that is not in proximity to a fracking well. Yesterday morning we had a 3.1 quake, the most recent in a series a small quakes.
We have three Democrats on the ballot for the county commission. Please wish us luck.
