An Extremely Helpful List of Fake and Misleading News Sites to Watch Out For

As Facebook and now Google face scrutiny for promoting fake news stories, Melissa Zimdars, a communication and media professor from Merrimack College in Massachusetts, has compiled a handy list of websites you should think twice about trusting. “Below is a list of fake, false, regularly misleading, and otherwise questionable ‘news’ organizations that are commonly shared on Facebook and other social media sites,” Zimdars explains. “Many of these websites rely on ‘outrage’ by using distorted headlines and decontextualized or dubious information in order to generate likes, shares, and profits.” (Click here to see the list.)

Be warned: Zimdars’s list is expansive in scope, and stretches beyond the bootleg sites (many of them headquartered in Macedonia) that write fake news for the sole reason of selling advertisements. Right-wing sources and conspiracy theorists like Breitbart and Infowars appear alongside pure (but often misinterpreted) satire like the Onion and The New Yorker’s Borowitz Report. “Not all of these sources are always or inherently problematic, but I’m including them because they should be considered in conjunction with other news/info sources due to their tendency to rely on clickbait headlines,” Zimdars notes. You should read it closely, feel free to disagree, and, in the spirit of media literacy, do your own research.

I've found many writings on Blue Nation Review (since renamed) to be informative. They openly state that they are a progressive site. But it's a bit like saying Lawrence O'Donnell should be on the list because he is quite direct at calling out BS. Oh wait, the author included the MSNBC site too. And Politicususa. Wow...

The author of this list has a different definition than I do of "clickbait." Or, she's engaging in false equivalence.

msnbc.com is the correct site. The ones that say msnbc.com.co and msnbc.website are fakes.

And glad to see it make the Greatest Page. I replied to a post yesterday that referenced an article from a website on the list and pointed out that the article could be considered a bit misleading. I was promptly accused of harassment and challenging the legitimacy of the post when I did nothing of the sort.

The article focused on something that is done so routinely it's hardly news. The way they wrote the article made it sound like the action could have meaningful consequences that are, in reality, unlikely to ever happen. Was anything in the story wrong? Nope. Would someone not reading it closely enough make assumptions about it that weren't warranted? Absolutely. It was written to raise hopes on the left for justice being served when the editors probably knew damn well it was something that would go absolutely nowhere.

Whether we each agree with the list in its entirety or not, it brings awareness to a large and growing problem. While I don't feel the left does it to the degree the right does, that we do it at all (and fall for it) is troubling to me.

My own list of credible news sources is fairly short and I don't trust any of them to be entirely unbiased.

I can't stomach television news at all. It's just too powerful a medium for propaganda. All of it seems tainted in some way, which probably reflects the cost of producing it. It's the voice of big money and political power.

If some news story has a strong visual component it can be presented as a short, non-essential video clip within a larger written article.

Certainly far more right wing ones, but we shouldn't close our eyes to our own.

I was surprised to see Addicting Info but once I started taking a closer look at some of their stories I could see why.

I have one FB "friend" that has been posting fake news like crazy during the run up to the election, I wrote down some of the websites.

americanupdater.com

healthnutnews.com

endingthefed.com

truepundit.com

thepoliticalinsider.com

I tried alerting on a couple of these, there was no button to click for fake news so I clicked "other". Neither post was removed.
