Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsLet me make this crystal fucking clear. The word "Christian" ...
as it applies to politics and the so-called "Christian right" no longer has any meaning whatsoever.
I speak as a Christian myself ... one who has nothing but contempt for the phonies who wrap themselves in pious bullshit, while voting for an individual who is the very antithesis of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The hypocrisy of certain self-described "evangelical Christians" is now on full display for anyone who cares to look.
Those people would vote for Beelzebub himself, if he had an "R" appended to his name. There's no need for them to pretend otherwise any longer; and every time they try to play that card, I will holler bullshit at the top of my lungs.

It's still in the works, but suffice it to say, they took the abolitionist argument and countered it with a perversion of God's white superiority over other races and fused with with what is known as Southern paternalism. They enlisted clergy to argue this from a religious standpoint, because past justifications were being met with religious scrutiny. These distortions were pushed by the various Protestant churches to justify slavery, as some means to take slaves away from unbelieving traders and place them into an environment where they might embrace Christianity. Since one's self is not able to be taken, they claimed it was only labor that was being used. When the slaves died, they would then be afforded a Christian afterlife, where they would not have had one before. This helped to justify the psychological splitting of the self, so the slaveholders and non-slaveholders could come to terms with that institution and still see themselves compliant to Christianity.
It's still work in progress, as I have only performed the base and cursory secondary source readings to compile the annotated bibliography.

(55,894 posts)Your Dad's group is one example. But it doesn't own or define who the Evangelicals are.
"Evangelical" refers to a theology. How a group expresses that theology varies.
Regarding the Evangelical Left:
Typically, members of the evangelical left affirm the primary tenets of evangelical theology, such as the doctrines of the Incarnation, atonement, and resurrection, and also see the Bible as a primary authority for the Church. Unlike many evangelicals, however, those on the evangelical left support what are often considered progressive or left wing political policies. They are often, for example, opposed to capital punishment and supportive of gun control and welfare programs. In many cases, they are also pacifists. Theologically they also often support and utilize modern biblical criticism, whereas more conservative evangelicals reject it.
While members of the evangelical left chiefly reside in mainline denominations, they are often heavily influenced by the Anabaptist social tradition.

(1,364 posts)My congregation is an RIC (Reconciled In Christ) ELCA Lutheran congregation with a rainbow flag by the front steps. We are probably the most lefty church in the county and for sure the leftiest in our Foothills Conference (ELCA). We are growing in membership where the other churches are in decline. We went through a series of schisms dealing with the GLBT issue and now, we have lost all the Conservatives. We serve our community. Going through the cash that someone gave us 10 years ago by feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. When it is gone, it is gone. A church is not a building, it is the people. A YUGE factor of our congregation is the definition of Grace: G-d's undeserved love for all. NO EXCEPTIONS. We do not believe in a retributive G-d, but a cooperative G-d. We celebrate Ramadan with our Muslim neighbors. I am the gay deacon who at times leads the service. While most of us supported Bernie, we had no problem getting behind Hillary. Far better than the Cowardly Lying Orange Cokehead Caligula. Who is greed-driven, which last I checked, is a Deadly Sin.

(266 posts)Part of being traditionally evangelical is the active encouragement for others to convert to Christianity, to evangelize, hence the name. It is the actions of those who are eager to convert others and to not respect the beliefs of others that seem hypocritical, especially concerning tRumps personality.

"Whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean." See Matthew 23:27
If Jesus himself walked the streets of America today and preached the gospel there is no doubt that the religious right would crucify him just as their forefathers did the first time.
There is no prosperity gospel in the bible or 7 mountain dominunism either or mega church entertainment centers/book stores/movie/music malls.
Jesus would clean them all out with a whip IMO.

Now don't get me wrong, Ivanka Trump is pretty damn attractive, presumably because she was lucky enough to inherit her mother's genes. What isn't attractive is the bizarre relationship she has with her father and presidential hopeful, Donald Trump.
In the September 2015 edition of Rolling Stone, Donald said: Yeah, shes really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I werent happily married and, ya know, her father?.?.?.? And when asked on The View how he would feel if Ivanka modeled for Playboy, he said, "If Ivanka werent my daughter, perhaps, I would be dating her, while she was sitting right next to him.
Now blogger Tim Ireland has discovered a photograph that all but confirms that Donald Trump wants to bang his own daughter.

(1,089 posts)There are a couple in my extended family. It's to the point, when they start spewing their dishonest, bigoted hateful bullshit, that I explain to them the following:
1. I don't go to church.
2. I don't belong to an organized religion.
3. I don't give one damn dime to any religion or preacher.
4. I don't talk about the "lessons of the Bible."
Yet I do:
1. Give money to the poor.
2. Donate time to the homeless.
3. Have a long history of rescuing animals - we have a rescue dog right now.
4. Volunteer coaching kids soccer and other things.
So I tell them that they need to STFU since I live a whole lot more like Jesus than any of them. I also don't hate:
1. Brown people
2. Poor people
3. People who aren't American
4. Gay folks
5. Women
Or basically anyone not exactly like them. And neither did Jesus.
That always shuts them the fuck up. I'm beyond tired of them, and Maher had it exactly right - a whole lot of these people have no freaking principles or beliefs whatsoever - they just use "Jesus" as an excuse to act like horrible people Monday-Saturday, go to church on Sunday and proclaim themselves cleanses of sin. Fuck off.

(12,882 posts)My folks never took me to church, but I did voluntarily go with some of my childhood friends on occasion. I wasn't seeking a faith to call my own, I just enjoyed my friends enough to want to hang with them while they did their thing. Eventually, I started to think how odd it was that these different denominations all claimed Jesus and the good book were THEIRS and no one else's. Fortunately, none of them got pass my budding sense of reality. Respect and common sense is all that the world needs to live in harmony. If only those thumpers could READ their "favorite book" with un-tinted glasses.

(209 posts)It all comes down to Separation of Church and State. The government should not be funding religion period. Many immigrants came to the United States to flee persecution from a dominant religion. The fact that we valued the Freedom of Religion and from it is key.
It seems like lately we are being pushed toward a dominant Christian Conservative perspective above all else and that seems to be chipping away from the Separation of Church and State. I agree with your right to be anti religion. However, in the history of Civil Rights, religion played a key role. One example would be the Quaker meeting houses two hundred years ago who invited speakers like Frederick Douglas, Lucretia Mott, Susan B Anthony etc to their meetings. This spurred on their involvement in the Underground Railroad movement, the Woman's Right's movement and unfortunately the WTC. Fast forward to Rev. Martin Luther King and the churches that promoted Civil Rights that became a movement.
I think if religions supporting Civil Rights banded together no matter the religion or non religion they could be a powerful force for change once again. I may be naive, but it might be a way to effect positive change. It's all about coming together and not being divided.
Zing Zing Zingbah
(6,496 posts)even as a child. They think they are morally superior to everyone else, yet a lot of them seem to lack basic empathy for other human beings. I really bothers me that the Republicans think they are they party that represents freedom when they are the ones who want the government to tell us how we can live our lives. Republicans seem to think freedom means not paying taxes and small, weak government. The problem with the weak government is it is not empowered to protect and support its people. If we don't have those government protections, then we lose our freedom to thugs and bullies.

And yeah the sad thing is the right is where all the corruption lies - the stealing, lying, cheating, sex scandals... yet they have the balls for passing their corruption onto us. But a lot of that all goes back to the Southern Strategy. It has failed us. For 40 years these assholes have had a strangelhold on our government and done absolutely nothing except screw us over. Donald Trump is just anotehr building block in that strategy. We need a new strategy. One that favors democratic and progressive candidates with laws that benefit the middle and working class and not the wealthy elites. One day all these assholes will get caught. Then we will be free.

My own family has essentially disowned me because I'm twice-divorced and moved away from the homestead.
