What's the opposite of rose colored glasses? I'm searching for a figure of speech.

I'm looking for a colloquialism here. If someone only looks at the sunny side, we say they've got rose colored glasses on.

What do you call it when someone only looks at the shitty side of things. I need something more colorful than "pessimistic" or more folksy than "glass half empty."

See, us optimists need to have kneejerk insults too. (isn't that wonderful?)

Not sure it has the impact I'm looking for. This is for an academic argument with someone who says the KKK represents America but MLK doesn't--essentially the kind of myopic intellectual who accedes patriotism and the flag to conservatives and dismisses all arguments based on the Constitution as the "work of slaveholders".

You've got somebody with major blinders on.
I will think some more.
How academic is this guy?

You knew it was a male from the obstinacy.

But you were wrong to assume it was singular. It's a pack of gentlemen. Argument isn't good enough. I need the power of poetic imagery to win.

Winnie the Pooh's sad donkey friend. A guy I used to work with had such a negative attitude towards everything that his nickname (behind is back) was Eeyore.
