First off I hope everyone at DU has a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm thankful to communicate with a broad spectrum of people here. Please share what you're doing for Thanksgiving & what types of things you enjoy doing in terms of gift giving.
A couple of friends are cooking a beautiful meal. They're actively involved with a local charity called the Food Depot, that provides food to people in need. So I gave a good donation for them and will print the receipt along with a nice card. I know they care more about this than about yet another bottle of wine or whatever.
This holiday time I'm going to have a small party and want to require that people bring either: toys for children who need them and / or warm clothing like winter coats & good warm shoes & socks for people who need them. If anyone has ideas on how I might plan a party like this (as in, what organizations to contact where I can either drop off the contributions or have them come pick them all up at my home) it would be greatly appreciated!
Happy thanksgiving everyone. Let's give thanks for our community and let's also give generously if we can to those in need.

You might be able to get the nearby reserve unit or recruiting station to come by and fetch the toys from you.

(550 posts)Local child services may know of any local foster child group home. A guy at work contacts such a facility each year and asks for a needs list - down to shoe size. Then he collects the items on the list and wraps them to put under the tree.

(6,819 posts)One local organization - non-profit - in our area resettles people, addressing needs from medical/dental to clothing to housing to addiction. We just made a trip to Costco and bought a number of items on their wish list:
kitchen towels
cleaning supplies
underwear
diapers
personal hygiene products
laundry soap
dish soap
shower curtains
Etc.
