I keep seeing all these suggestions about how to keep peace at the table with political discussions. I admire the efforts and think that is a noble idea. I chose not to join a family gathering that could include Trump supporters, not because of what they might say. I am the one I was worried about. I am not calm. I am actually terrified and I am the one who would rant, scream and leave bad feelings at the table. To quote the Dixie Chicks...." I am not ready to make nice". I can understand why some people thought he was speaking for them, but the educated, kind and reasonably Christian people who ignored all the awful things about him make me furious.
My husband, sister and I will not be exciting or fun.....but we will be in accord.

(4,150 posts)Luckily I live in a very blue city and state. But my parents (good liberals) live in a horribly red state, surrounded by Republicans. I just can't bear going down there this year. And as you said, I am more worried about how I may behave than anything else.
I have never, never been this upset. I am having Thanksgiving dinner with friends this year and am avoiding ANY red areas for now.

(26,268 posts)Two young women, who will be at my house, voted for the first time, this year. Initially, both were Bernie supporters, as was I, but I encouraged them to support Hillary and they did. Both are pretty shattered and disillusioned. I can empathize. My first vote was for George McGovern.
I don't want them to let this experience sour them on being politically active. Anything I can share about my journey, that will help to get them back on track, I will.

(21,163 posts)But my cousins sister is going to her in laws who are OH supporters and I heard she is not happy about it. I'm kind of surprised by them. They seem like nice people who live in Marin but they are Cheeto supporters.
