So Trump invites the press over to Trump Tower and reportedly berates them.

Yet Trump gets invited over to the New York Times building the next day and plays more or less nice and timid.

During the campaign, Trump goes to Mexico and holds a joint press conference with the Mexican president and quietly stares off into space, not even mentioning his infamous wall. Later that same day, he goes to Arizona to hold an event in front of his rabid supporters and berates Mexico and demands Mexico pay for his wall.

And of course he'll say whatever he wants to say on Twitter.

I sense a pattern here.

His braggadocio seems to manifest itself in places where he feels safe and in control and in power. (His own personal "safe spaces", one might say.) Outside of his comfort zone, he feels lost and uncomfortable and at a loss for words.

Problem is, the Presidency is an insular job. He can hole himself up into the White House (or Trump Tower or Mar a Lago if he so wills it) and cause a tremendous amount of damage. If he's not overwhelmed and confronted literally face to face with those who could be impacted by his words, he'll put that in the back of his mind, and rising to the top will be the fact he's the most powerful man in the world.
