NASA scientist says it won't be so easy for Trump to purge federal agencies of climate researchers

Trump to Scrap NASA Climate Research in
Crackdown on ‘Politicized Science’

Nasa’s Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding as the president-elect seeks to shift focus away from home in favor of deep space exploration https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/nov/22/nasa-earth-donald-trump-eliminate-climate-change-research

Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist and director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, which studies the changing atmosphere, says that it won't be simple for Trump to purge federal agencies of climate researchers during his presidency.

"Chopping off science just to prevent people from talking about climate change won't work," Schmidt told Business Insider. "You need science for hazards, for weather forecasting, and climate comes along for the ride."

"I'd be lying if I said that there wasn't some level of concern," Schmidt said. "But the federal government is a very, very large place. And the number of appointees is very small."

"I don't think one should be complacent," he added. "I think people are going around going 'Oh yeah it's just the same as the last time and it will be fine, it will be fine, it will be fine.' I'm finding it hard to muster that kind of optimism."

{}

"During the Bush administration we had climate skeptics rewriting reports and trying to control what's said to the media," he said. "But the planet kept warning. We kept reporting on it. We kept improving the science that underlies our understanding of why it's changing. And we will work to continue to do so."

The successful launch of GOES-R and the future launch of GOES-S next year. Great multitasking ultra HD satellites. In the first 6 months of operation, GOES-R will send back more data than all Satellites over the past 40 years. I can't wait till it goes active!

Impossible to separate one life-protecting function from another life-preserving one.

...but like us, he's pushing forward with optimism about climate science moving forward, and that's good to read.

I think it'll take vigilance and activism from all of us, though, to keep him in the game.

Trump is a simp on science, but he'll likely let the worst influences tear through whatever progress we've made that they can get their hands on.

Without our precious planet, we have nothing. So we have to keep fighting for it. It breaks my heart to see what is happening in the Dakotas.

...on all environmental fronts.

It's hard to not look at the hastening, accelerating demise of the environment, and not see pure evil overtake our efforts to change our ways and save our planet.

Whenever I think of the 'clean jobs economy' which ANY Democrat would have ushered in for generations to come, and this ignorant buffoon determined to just come in and break everything, I'm sick to my stomach.

It kills me that they are going after the short term dollar and greed instead of considering long term consequences. Oklahoma is a mess with earthquakes. A state not known for earthquakes. But they are franking the hell out of the region.

There is potential for profit and safety with wind and solar. We need to harness that now.
