California is Trumpland's Nemesis

Great article by Robert Reich

Are conservatives right? At the one end of the scale are Kansas and Texas, with among the nation’s lowest taxes, least regulations and lowest wages.

At the other end is California, with among the nation’s highest taxes, especially on the wealthy; toughest regulations, particularly when it comes to the environment; most ambitious health care system, that insures more than 12 million poor Californians, in partnership with Medicaid; and high wages.

So according to conservative doctrine, Kansas and Texas ought to be booming, and California ought to be in the pits.

Actually, it’s just the opposite.

I must say, I'm proud to live in California. Yes, we have our issues, but it is still a great place to live. Plus, I love setting a good example for the rest of the country.

...West Coast Division, we would be happy to extend our borders in relatively narrow strips down both coasts. Unfortunately, we are unable at this time to offer the same southern reach on both coasts, going to the southern US border along only the WAORCA corridor.

In the East, we would have to decline to offer the same southern latitude. For the foreseeable future, this would mean the southern extent on the right coast would be the southern border of NY state.

We hope you understand.

I don't see how. Imagine having to give up the postal service and Social Security and Medicare.

I do like our governor's idea of building a wall around California as Tribblehead is in charge.

There would be no way to have national defense, postal services, etc. And who pays for the roads and schools? There just seems like too much logistic wise.

As a Blue State, that California sends much more $ to Washington than it receives in return. That would stop. That money would be available to use in the State.

But there are other issues. Trade policy, Currency (you would have to ditch the $ or you would have no control over your finances.), Borders, Defense and probably a hundred others I haven't thought about.

9 Brazil 1,769,600
10 Canada 1,532,340
11 South Korea 1,404,380
12 Russia[n 3] 1,267,750
13 Australia 1,256,640
14 Spain

Seems doable.

(Military Bases, DoE, DoI, etc), we won't.

Now, if the Congress decides to be really stupid and just turn all major Federal funding (sans DoD) into block grants back to the States for them to screw their own citizens, we might consider withholding until the state gets back what we put into the federal coffers back in a more equitable manner (for every $1.00 we give the feds, we get maybe $.60 back, as opposed to other states that get back $1.70 for every dollar they give...).

Why should we get sneered at for being oh-so-liberal and called Commies - while we're doing the majority of the sharing for the welfare of the nation as a whole? Why should a percentage of our tax dollars go to paying a few entrenched "family" corporations who want to play at being Feudal Lords and steal Federal services from 75% of the populations in backwards Red states?

You'll see almost all of the Red State governors howl, when they find out that they lose over 50% of the money they get just because California won't be part of their trickle-down crap if we leave. And we'd be happy to take Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Colorado with is.
But then again, we won't - we'll just take in refugees from Red States who want a chance at a good education and decent paying jobs. Who want to live in the real world, instead of a group of isolationist idiot's modern-day Game of Thrones fantasy-land.

That is, unless the GOP pulls some really, really stupid shit.

....cut the rest of the state loose and let them fend for themselves. They pay less than their share of the NY State government expenses and bitch about it unceasingly.

Look at a NYS county map and see who voted how and who are the biggest whiners.

And while they're at it, maybe NYC can sell Staten Island to New Jersey for $12 in trinkets!

That was the name of the Mexican province which is the now American Southwest, before it was ceded to the US by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.

Anyone heard anything on that Mexican senator planning to introduce legislation to invalidate the 1848 treaty? He threatened it if we dump NAFTA.

California is living proof that all of their dumbass arguments - that are unfortunately voted for in the millions by dumbasses - are completely false. I also like to toss this out there when someone tells me that California is some commie, welfare state hellhole:

Um, no, actually, we're paying your bills, red states. How about you get off of YOUR asses and pull yourself up by your bootstraps? Nah, it's easier just to live off of me.

I don't normally like to get into the 'us vs. them' stuff, but I've been getting it up to my eyeballs since that asshole stole the election.

Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland, Chicago, etc.

They will never cite Silicon Valley or LA, Portland, Seattle, or any other booming tech cities. They also skip over booming rust belt cities that transformed their economies: twin cities, Pittsburgh.

Bay area's success and the fact that San Francisco is among the most liberal places in the country is just a trivial coincidence to them.
