We've lost all the levers of (legitimate) power during this election.
So what do we do now to fight the fuckery of Trump and the GOP?
All suggestions accepted. No violent replies. Please.
But if you have any constructive suggestions of how to fight the tyranny that is about to befall us, let's hear it.

(29,565 posts)This is what I said my new position was going to be. The morning after, while DU was hacked. I don't feel much better now.
"Go f**k yourself, I didn't vote for him, leave me alone, it's not my problem, go to hell, where's my money?, did I remember to say go f**k yourself?"
For democrats it is: "Go f**k yourself, I didn't vote for him, I voted for her but I voted for Bernie in the primary, leave me alone, it's not my problem, go to hell, I'm not giving you any money, did I remember to say go f**k yourself?"

(10,173 posts)Tearing each other down. The progressives and centrists need to understand this, particularly the progressives. Yes I'm still bitter and angry I endured a year of crappy arguments and ideas and how those ideas overtook my party.
We need a cohesive economic vision that embraces the future. Trump's populist ideas will flop. Bannon and Trump are pushing for American Nationalism - America is pluralistic and Bannon/Trump's ideas will take us back over 50 years. Fk that. We're on the brink of a technological revolution - let US be the party with the solutions and ideas to counter the effects of this. And let us be the party with sound ideas to counter climate change. Trump has no real concept of the future, he wants America to be 1952 again.
We also need to watch for executive overreach . ....... *I know i know - Obama etc etc etc but now more than ever we need to watch for this*
Stop blaming "Identity politics" , Liberals have always understood the importance of the individual in the society and how institutions affect liberty and rights of individuals while also addressing economic concerns.

We are so, so fucked. And my question is: "What do we do now?"

(10,173 posts)But...
Absolutely first thing? Push for recounts in those mid west States.
Highlight Trump's corruption, resist the Media normalizing Trump and his corruption.
Dems are still too fucking silent about it, and seem to want to placate nerves. Now is not the time for caution and politeness for politeness sake.

(167 posts)Until we own our own state houses, the Congress and Senate, owning the white house will only be an impotent gesture. Historically the party in power loses seats during the midterms. Lets set a goal and make it a Democratic earthquake.

I don't care if they are your friends, FUCK 'em
I don't care if they are your neighbours, FUCK 'em
I don't care if they are your co-workers, FUCK 'em
NO FUCKING QUARTER- EVER
I simply do not think that most people on this board and out in the country at large understand the DIRE situation the country is in.
Every time you give in and try and appease or make nice with these fuckers is just another nail in your coffin.
If things go truly as pear shaped as I fear they will, I would highly suggest you move out of the country.
The potential is REALLY there, especially if you are a woman, LGBTQ, PoC, for your lives to be rendered null and void.
Long term, you are looking at a huge swathe of your inherent civil rights and humanity being carved away from your bodies and the body politic itself.
It unfortunately likely may come down to violent confrontation.

(68,586 posts)college student...great kid. She was stalked on social media along with the rest of her college unity group...the Trumpers showed up with hateful signs including some expressing support for the Orlando shooter...I called the school but they have free speech don't you know. So...the parents and friends of these kids are going to the next meeting with cameras...going to photograph every one of these haters and post it everywhere. Often light is sanitizing. We have to fight back on every level...no one is sticking my baby in a corner or putting her back in a closet.

(4,858 posts)...these two phrases just might be incompatible with each other. Ask George Washington. Ask the Maquis. Ask the Spanish Republicans. If we are literally entering a tyranny in this country, it won't allow itself to be voted out of office.

(15,041 posts)There is just so much that can be said online.
You've chosen the name First Speaker. The original First Speaker was Hari Seldon. He took the long view.
And he never let those he was opposing understand his intentions.

(2,679 posts)Hey if there is peaceful way or at least a way to do this in a manner that causes the least amount of harm, to stop the madness before it is sworn in, I am all for it.
I keep toying with the idea of donating 20$. Anyone else thinking about it? Has anyone here donated? I am thinking seriously about it.

(13,616 posts)the same thing the GOP, conspired from day one to make Trump a one term president, that means boycotts of his business and those who work with him (like NBC and CNN), It means donating and Maybe volunteering with folks like the ACLU, especially if those organizations look out for LGBT or muslim americans. It means taking over local elections, from the dogcatcher to the school board, and it also means making sure that the folks who were responsible for fuck ups (like Debbie Schultz) are made to wander the wilderness.
The enemy wants us to feel helpless, we are not, and we need to make the GOP bleed for every half inch of turf, so we can throw them a mile back once they pass out from the bleeding.

(13,186 posts)Liberal-minded (progressive, rationality-respecting, perspective-possessing...) people need to unite in loyalty behind the Democratic Party.
Unite?
Loyalty?
Democratic Party?
Yep. Some may not like them, but those factors are a huge part of the answer. Not liking them is why we keep losing even though we have a better team.

(15,041 posts)Here's a clip from "The West Wing" to remind us who and what we are:
Edit: This is such a great clip, I started a new thread with it. No one should ever be ashamed of being called a "liberal." We should be proud of it.
gulliver
(13,186 posts)...and a noun less. The noun should be Democrat. So, I'm a liberal yes. But more often I will describe myself as "liberal or progressive leaning." If people ask me my politics, I'm a Democrat.
That may make folks feel squeamish. Isn't that (horrors) "partisan?"
Yep, that's exactly what it is. The noun "Democrat" appears on ballots and the noun "liberal" doesn't (and can't reasonably hope to any time soon). That's why I say we need to stop being un-committed, non-partisan "liberals" and start being committed Democrats. Yes, I realize, that idea gives people a sort of negative tingle. That's the problem. That's why we lose.
