The FBI just got access to Twitter data. Should you be concerned?

Matt Rocheleau Globe Staff November 24, 2016

The FBI recently signed a deal that will give it access to monitor Twitter’s “firehose” — every tweet posted publicly each day, roughly 500 million of them.

The move has raised privacy concerns and claims that Twitter is not being consistent in enforcing its ban on data being used for surveillance purposes.

“It’s deeply frightening that the FBI is about to access, and may already have access to, this very powerful tool,” said Kade Crockford, from the American Civil Liberties Union.

The FBI, like anyone else, has been able to track some publicly-posted tweets all along, but Twitter’s public-facing interface provides users access to only a small slice of tweets at a time, while beneath the surface millions of tweets fly back and forth.

Twitter is a public space. PUBLIC being the operative word. You give up any expectation of privacy when you post in public, when you make your comments available to the general population.

So, it depends on how it is used. Would we be concerned if say hypothetically we knew an FBI director willingly abused his power for political purposes? How about if we knew the government spies on political activists?

available to the public at large nation wide?

It is not private. Period. If it isn't private how can a person infer a violation of privacy?

If you put your stuff out there it can be used by anyone for any purpose. I don't even think you can copy right public statements.
