WASHINGTON What happens when a 70-year-old man whose bluster has rarely carried much consequence wins a job where his every syllable is dissected for meaning?
America and the world are about to find out.
In the past year, Donald Trump has mocked a journalists disability, bragged about the size of his genitalia on national television and suggested a political rivals father assassinated former President John F. Kennedy. Just eight weeks ago, he told his millions of Twitter followers to check out [the] sex tape of a Miss Universe winner who said that Trump had bullied her when he owned the pageant.
In less than 60 days, he is set to become president of the United States and commander-in-chief of the worlds most powerful armed forces ― where his every utterance will be scrutinized for its meaning and duly recorded for posterity.
He feels he could say something one minute and say the opposite the next, said Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian at Rice University. Hes going to do it around the world There may be countries that call our bluff on that. In a nuclear world, thats frightening.

I'm 60 and it's been a good run.
It's my children and grandchildren and everyone else I fear for.

(14,576 posts)You know what, though? While people stupid enough to vote for Trump, or WORSE, those who did not vote, can be said to be getting 'the government they deserve,' what about us?
I don't deserve a Trump government. Nor does my wife, nor my children, nor my grandchildren. Nor do I or my family deserve a civil war to burn over this land.
The serious asskicking comment makes me uncomfortable because I know it is happening or will happen, but I'd hoped that it wouldn't in my lifetime.
Damn.

(7,908 posts)claim after Vietnam and Iraq that the U.S. doesn't deserve what's coming? You have to wear a pair of seriously rose-colored glasses to maintain that posture.
I'm hoping a Mandela-type figure emerges who can negotiate the transition bloodlessly, but I'm not holding my breath.

(111,267 posts)It looks like we'll have Empire wrested away from us by the rest of the world instead of slowly giving it up to concentrate on fixing things at home. Funny how that works in all Empires through history.
We're not going to win the next one, folks. We don't even make our own shoes any more.
