What I Learned At The Barbershop In My Peckerwood Hometown

I live in a pretty big city, but it's only about an hour away from the college town I grew up in. After our parents died, we held onto their house and are down there on a fairly regular basis. It is a house, after all, and like any house needs regular attention. It's also the town where I get my hair cut. I found this guy about ten years ago, and he's a really good barber. In addition, a haircut only costs $12, a bargain these days.

So last weekend, I got there early and was the second in line when the shop opened. Customer #1 and the barber launched into a conversation that laid out the burning concerns of "Real America". A few desultory remarks about the election went by; George Soros paying demonstrators $15/hour to protest at Trump rallies, and this one student at the local college who said she was attacked by Trump fans - but of course, this attack "probably never happened".

The main issues, though, were as follows, and were the focus of the heat and energy of their conversation:

1. James Bond - In their words, that Idra-something guy - you know, the new James Bond. You can kinda see why they picked him, because if the lighting's just right, he almost looks like a white guy. Still, they should have hired somebody else.

2. The Green Lantern/Green Hornet/Green Somebody -I'm not really conversant in the world of superheroes, but apparently one of these superhero series is undergoing a reboot, and he's gay. They should have just left it alone.

3. Frozen - Apparently there's a sequel in the works or some sort of reworking of Frozen, and the story line may involve a gay female love interest. They should have just left it alone - why can't they just leave it alone?!!??

There you have it - the real issues fueling white rage in "Real America" - a fictional spy being played by a black man, a fictional superhero who's gay and a cartoon character who's a lesbian. Such horrific assaults on American Values will not stand!

2. The most insulting reasoning I've heard on this election..

..was on NPR this morning. A tenured faculty member (Columbia, I think) implied democrats lost the election because of the groups they've chosen to protect: gays, Black Lives Matter, transgender teens who want to use a particular bathroom, etc.

I am proud to be a protester of Trump. I will NEVER be an enabler of or a bystander to his abuse of my fellow American citizens.

I don't see what we could have done to win over Trump's voters. Nothing gave them pause: not his mocking of a disabled man, not him failing to pay his contractors, using money out of a charity to pay his legal bills, being an inspiration to the people in the KKK. We're not the ones with a problem--they are.

3. I agree strongly with the last paragraph

and have noted that repeatedly for over a year.

It is DONALD FUCKING TRUMP. If anyone even had the first thought of voting for him, there is no talking to them in a sane, rationale manner.

As to the first paragraph, I don't know exactly what NPR said, but this is something people here are having a hard time wrapping their heads around.

It is not coddling the jackasses, is it NOT saying that the democratic party should not stick up for the rights of ALL americans.

But, this election turned into 1 1/2 years of Trump waking up in the morning and insulting some non white, non christian group and democrats running to their defense. Mexicans, Muslims, BLM, Transgenders.

AGAIN, it is our responsibility to ensure their rights. But, in his insane way, Trump drew us into a battle that was to our disdvantage, it fractured away parts of our coalition who have issues with these people who might have stayed in our coalition if there was a primary economic discussion vs the "indentity politics" discussion we ended up having, it helped to make their idiot drones turn into completely amped up on steroids to vote loons and fed into the Rs frame that all the Ds do is "identity politics."

People here are having a hard time having that pointed and and not reflexively thinking people are saying give up on these groups. It is NOT binary, you can both stand up for these groups, ensure their rights WHILE IN POWER while also getting elected to be able to do so.

YES, we are divided into two halves in this country - the absurdly hateful masses who have now moved us to an authoritarian, fascist country and those of us who have a more romantic and (now practically speaking) sadly naive notion of what this country should be. But, what the last 30 years has shown is that elections almost always are won with people voting AGAINST SOMETHING.

06 and 08 were our only elections where we saw any real gains in congress and states and those were anti-bush elections. EVERY R gains have been hatefests. The only elections won on any kind of positive messaging were the BHO elections, and that is a testiment to what a great and unusually commanding person he is.

I don't know the answer to break through. I just know we got sucked into a rabbit hole over the last year and a half and republicans now have complete power at every level of government and we are fucked.

.. and normalize Trump!

This might work with those looking for confirmation bias.

Using a college professor is what I call going really low
by looking like they're going high.

Most of us here are not fooled, but many will be!

Exactly right. And it scares me to think that some people I knew and trusted have either changed, or I didn't really know them at all. One person I'm thinking of was worked up over the transgender bathroom laws and that Dems couldn't get anything done about guns. My only consolation js that they have to live with their cognitive dissonance and/or get frustrated over the Con's broken promises.

Hatred makes people stupid. Think, say, and do stupid stuff. Many Trump supporters are filled with hatred for this, that, and another. Their hatred is so strong and habitual, that they don't even recognize it. They take delight in seeing bad stuff happen to those that they hate. That's called vengence. Vengence and retribution for those that question their so-called morality based on their assumed superiority. You can forget trying to reason with them. Facts, reason, and logic are not satisfying to a mind filled with hatred. But vengence - ah - they like that just fine.

Elba has been talked about being a Bond actor for years. But it hasn't happened. They're worrying about something that isn't even a thing. Supposedly Craig is interested in coming back for another run at it anyway.

Nothing on the green lantern or green hornet front either. Hornet is up for a reboot but everything about that is pure speculation at this point.

As for the third, well, a billion dollar movie getting a sequel? I can only imagine how THEY'D run a company if they wouldn't pursue something that makes money.

Maroons.

Everything is right on track.

What's interesting to me is how these folks feel victimized by entertainment options. Nobody will make them go see a particular movie. If they don't like the actor or the plot, they can choose not to see it. But they are told that they are being abused. They are told that these options are actually being forced on them - "jammed down their throats" is a favorite term.

Poor little victims.

ANY Republican ticket is guaranteed at least 40% of the vote just by having that "R" in front of their names.

You could have a Republican ticket of Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo.

You could have a Republican ticket with the ghosts of Hitler and Mussolini.

You could have a Republican ticket of flounder filet and a stale hamburger bun.

Any of the above would STILL get 40% of the vote in an American presidential election.

We know it, and they know it. THAT is why they only try to manipulate the swing states. Mississippi would be carried by a ticket of Laurel and Hardy as Republicans before voting for Jesus and St. Peter if they were Democrats.

It is also why they want to defund any education not directed by them. Less education equals more Republicians.

there are at least 3 republicans in my office who would never, ever dream of being anything other than republican. gwbush didn't change that a whit, and either will drumpf. and I DON'T GET IT.
these people, some very smart, sweet, educated, accomplished, just say "I'm a republican," and nothing else in the world matters. how the fuck does that work?!

this particular insight, which i sadly and stupidly came to fairly recently, has had me shaking my head and wanting to scream and just basically saying what the fuck over and over and over, to no productive end of course. it's as if being republican drumpfs being human, being american, being a man or a woman, being thoughtful, on and on.

how does that WORK???
