They voted for him because 21st Century-society is too complicated and scary for homo sapiens.
Life used to be so simple.
* "Where everybody knows your na-a-ame..." You were a somebody.
* There are about 10-100 eligible boys/girls that you could possibly meet in your whole life and you may pick one of them. No endless quests searching for the one girl that looks like a supermodel, the girl that is okay with your childish behaviour, the girl that exists only for you and has no own life. No endless quests searching for a Mr Right who's soft and caring but also wild and unpredictable, a stable provider but also a restless adventurer, good-looking but he doesn't care that he's good-looking.
* Church, family, friends and school taught you things and those wisdoms were infallible and valid for the rest of your life.
But those days are gone.
* The internet has taken away your uniqueness. You are no longer special. There are millions, just like you. You are just a number.
* Endless possibilities to meet people. Endless options for hobbies and interests. More to experience and learn than fits into a life-time. More potential friends and lovers to discover than you can imagine.
That girl you just met? I can guarantee you 100% that a girl just like that, but prettier, exists somewhere out there. All you have to do to meet her is keep on dating, dating, dating.
* All those other religions who contradict yours. (And don't get me started on those smug Satan-worshipping atheists.) All the stereotypes and prejudices you learned are suddenly offensive. And science is living field of research where conclusions change willy-nilly, just because some egghead did a new experiment.
Sarcasm aside. The human is still a primitive creature. The human brain has not evolved significantly since the Stone-Age.
Bring a cavemen-child to today and it would grow up to a perfectly standard 21st-century human. Take away civilization from a perfectly standard 21st-century human and he transforms into a violent and barbaric caveman.
The human wants his life to be simple. That's why he fills his life with electronics and gadgets that can supposedly take care of any inconvenience.
Now, what would you do if somebody promised you, he could do just that for you?
Making your life simple, easy, convenient.
Doesn't that sound great?
You would get attention. You would be listened to. You would be taken care of.
No more endless search for a purpose in life that will make you happy, but instead the one solution that will solve all your problems once and for all and make your country great again.
No more doubts, no more shifting opinions, no more insecurity, but instead the assurance that your beliefs will be valid forever.
Doesn't that sound great?
And please don't believe that it's just conservatives who fall for this mindset. You can see exactly the same on the extreme left:
Life is complicated. You are a nobody. Your life is ruled by politicians and companies and bureaucrats you never meet. You are powerless, you are alone, you have lost control of your life. You are just a number.
But what if... What if there's some big scary conspiracy?
What if all of THIS, the whole world, is just one big conspiracy that exists to fool YOU??? ("If you pray, God can hear you."
That's right. If that conspiracy exists, then you are no longer a nobody. ("You are one of God's chosen people."
If that conspiracy exists, you are the protagonist of your life again and you would suddenly be on the same level again with the faceless forces that run the world. You would be the hero in this story, not a peasant! ("I have a special relationship with Jesus."
And you would be even more special because you would be one of the few people to see the TRUTH. ("Look at those stubborn unbelievers."
All you have to do is to believe. That this conspiracy exists. And that defeating it will make this country great again.
