We quite naturally should expect our political leaders to be of strong intellect. Sadly, that is not always the case. But low intelligence is a valid criticism of a candidate for office.

However, Trump has illustrated the fact that he is not a brilliant thinker many times, but still appears to have won. Apparently, not enough people care about that attribute.

If you'd like to post your GRE and LSAT scores, though, you're welcome to do so. Frankly, I can't remember my GRE score. It didn't seem important to me at the time, either. I got into grad school, though, so I guess it was adequate.

So is it really fair to make fun of a presidential candidate for being a dim bulb? Is it easier to become not-stupid than to become not-fat?

I absolutely agree that our leaders should not be dumbasses, but how do we make sure that doesn't happen again, as it clearly did with Bush and even more so with Trump? (I am not, of course, speaking of someone who has actually been diagnosed as developmentally disabled, since obviously that sort of condition is never fair game.) But Bush and Trump are just stupid. And by that I mean intellectually lazy, ill-informed and incurious, such that their probably more or less average IQs are not sufficient to keep them from doing dumb things. According to biographers, Trump doesn't read anything that's not about him. Accordingly, he doesn't know much of anything about anything outside his own bubble. The proper definition of "stupid" in this context therefore should be something like "willfully ignorant." That should be a curable condition. People choose to be that kind of stupid. And we should choose to reject such people if they run for office, but obviously that's not happening.

There's a whole lot of stupid going on. It's dangerous. I guess I'm in favor of stupid-shaming.

Winston Churchill's ability to lift the spirits of the British people in times of adversity were, however, neatly balanced with a sparkling line in withering put-downs.

Now Churchill has topped a poll of history's funniest insults with a famous jibe directed at either the socialist MP Bessie Braddock or the Conservative Lady Astor, the first female MP (depending on which version of the story you hear).

When accused by one of them of being 'disgustingly drunk' the Conservative Prime Minister responded: 'My dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.'

Since the Predator-elect has released virtually no information on how healthy he is, we can only speculate. Here's what we do know. He's 70, which makes him the oldest person ever inaugurated for a first term. He obviously overweight, possibly even obese (he can't seem to button his suit jacket over his bulbous gut). According to his own words, he never exercises and considers waving his arms around at one of his rallies as physical activity. He eats greasy, fattening fast food like McDonald's and KFC.

Would I be surprised if he croaked before his term is complete? Not at all.

Trump's corpulence is not being mocked for its own sake. Nobody's saying, "Ha, ha, look at the fat guy, what a slob, he sucks 'cuz he's fat." What they (and some of us) are saying is, "Here's a guy who looks like a quivering orange sack of blubber stuffed into an expensive suit that doesn't fit, and he has the nerve to call other people fat and ugly?" The difference is pretty obvious to me. I didn't make fun of Chris Christie for being fat although I never hesitated to point out that he was an asshole. But as far as I know Christie, for all his assholiness, wasn't in the habit of mocking other people's fatness. It's a big fat orange pot calling other pots black. It's a big fat ugly guy living in a big fat fake glass house throwing big fat stones. Fuck him. He's fat and orange and ugly and his hands are tiny.
