The Canadian prime ministers oddly warm remembrance of Fidel Castro set social media aflame Saturday as Castros many critics pilloried Justin Trudeaus statement calling the dead dictator a controversial and larger than life leader but stopping far short of condemning his actions.
Trudeau has met Castro, and said his father considered the dictator a friend. Canada and Cuba maintained diplomatic relations during the U.S. embargo, and Canadians have long vacationed on the island.
A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and health care of his island nation, Trudeau said in a statement released by the Canadian government. While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castros supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for 'el Comandante.' "
Trudeaus comments stood in stark contrast to American elected officials, including Sen. Marcio Rubio, R-Fla., whose parents left Cuba before Castro came to power. Is this a real statement or a parody? Because if this is a real statement from the PM of Canada it is shameful & embarrassing, Rubio said in a statement on Twitter.

(12,232 posts)I was watching Canadian news around a week ago and they had a segment about Trudeau visiting Cuba and reassuring the people there that Canada would keep relations with Cuba the same no matter what Trump does.
Conservatives from Canada and the US have been attacking Trudeau on that since and have amplified it after his remarks on Castro's death.

And many people particularly members of the Conservative Party are condemning the prime minister's statement, pointing out human rights violations during Castro's half-century regime.

When asked about the U.S. embargo on Cuba, the election of Donald Trump and concerns about the future of Canada-Cuba relations, Trudeau repeatedly tried to calm curious Cuban university students he was addressing.
The front row also held an unexpected guest: Cuban President Raul Castro.
"For me, election results in the United States won't change the strong relationship that is a friendship and a partnership between Canada and Cuba," Trudeau said.
