We could go back as far as the spring of 1918, when Samuel Bush became chief of the Ordnance, Small Arms and Ammunition Section of the War Industries Board of Bernard Baruch and Clarence Dillon, with national responsibility for government assistance to and relations with Remington and other weapons companies. Bush was essentially taking national responsibility for government assistance to his own Remington Arms Company and other weapon makers. Through these weapons manufacturers, Samuel Bush made and sold arms to 75% of the WWI combatants on both sides.

Or, if you prefer, we can advance one World War to Prescott Bush, who was a founding member and one of seven directors (including W. Averell Harriman) of the Union Banking Corporation (holding a single share out of 4,000 as a director), an investment bank that operated as a clearing house for many assets and enterprises held by German steel magnate Fritz Thyssen. In July 1942, the bank was suspected of holding gold on behalf of Nazi leaders. A subsequent government investigation disproved those allegations but confirmed the Thyssens' control, and in October 1942 the United States seized the bank under the Trading with the Enemy Act and held the assets for the duration of World War II. Journalist Duncan Campbell pointed out documents showing that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of a number of companies involved with Thyssen (Wikipedia).

Even later, on November 22, 1963, after Ike had publicly warned us of the dangers of the Military Industrial Complex, John F. Kennedy was killed. Some, myself included, believe this was a coup-d'etat by the MIC because in Bobby's words, "John actually believed he was president."

Later still, we can watch the American people become brainwashed from the seed planted in 1971 by the Powell memo, and again in 1984 when Reagan allowed the Fairness Doctrine to die. Then we can watch in horror at the ascension of Fox 'news,' the court ruling that they could lie and still call it 'truth,' and 'balanced reporting.' We can watch in mindless horror at the screamfest that is right wing hate-talk radio, and how it overtook the airwaves in the 1990s.

Then, as you say, the Republican coup that stole power from the Democrats in 2000, and then even more dubious results in 2004.

Now, we see that half of Americans believe Obama is not a citizen, and that unemployment has gone up under him. If you google 'treason,' Obama comes out as the second image - a wanted poster.

So, unfortunately, we have exactly the type of government now that a stupid, gullible, complacent people deserve.

People learn a version of history in school. In the US, that version is US centered, and it also promotes the idea that the US is the best country with the best ideals, and where every action taken is for the best of motives.

That the US has been at war for practically its entire existence is not generally known.

And every US war has been framed as a reluctant country acting in self-defense.

The fact that the US spends approximately 60% of tax revenues on war is not publicized or admitted. The war budget is spread among multiple entities to hide the full extent of the cost of war.

The fact that it is called the "Defense Department" is a deliberate bit of framing designed to deceive.

And there is a myth in this country of free and fair elections even though the entire electoral process has been effectively limited to white males until early in the 20th century. Even now, the huge number of complaints about ballot access and polling place irregularities are testimony to the fact that elections in this country are not fair.

But to say that conflicts with what people have been taught, and what they hear in the media. So I would agree with the complacent description in your excellent response.

I am imagining a novel, a political thriller.
The leader of the free world has lots of evidence that a foreign power has influenced the outcome of an election that chose a dangerous moron sociopath as his successor. He has information from multiple super-secret agencies regarding the interference. The problems he is facing are-

1) he doesn't know who he can trust, the FBI, for one, is certainly involved in the plot
2) he needs absolute, incontrovertible proof-confessions, transcripts of phone calls, proof of software hacks and machine tampering
3) he cannot tip his hand until the time is right
4) he wants to avoid a civil war
5) he has very little time

I think I will call my main character "Barack."

Time keeps getting shorter. The novel keeps getting more real.

One that hopefully is similar to the announcement after the secret operation that killed Bin laden. I'm thinking something like an announcement of arrests and secret raid and indictments and arrests made of various traitors, including Comrade Trumpski....

My wish I keep playing over and over in my head...

And I don't worry about a civil war breaking out and crazed Trump supporters - I would rather have that and believe we had a chance to save our Nation and fight for it than to have this maniac take us down the road to certain destruction of the Constitution. I keep praying my President, a Constitutional Scholar upholds his oath to protect the Constitution and our country, from enemies, foreign and domestic, and makes it his most important act ever for our Nation.

Thu Dec 15, 2016, 01:16 AM

Please be specific about who, what law they broke and what charge you want to bring.

No you can't just say Trump because you are really super sure positive that he had something to do with the Russian hacks on the DNC, which didn't actually have much impact on the election, especially compared to other factors.

The reason other people in the real world aren't running around like a chicken with their heads cut off, is that DU (like any group), has a real problem with becoming insular. It's a reinforcing cycle that somebody will post some unsubstantiated nonsense that then gets repeated and turned into "fact" in a game of telephone. In the real world, somebody like Obama has a responsibility to not panic and automatically assume it's the end of the world.

If the people who have the most accurate information aren't panicking, then perhaps you should stop an reassess if you actually understand the things you are taking as a reason to hyperventilate.
