Trump lost the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. They lost 6 seats in the House. They lost 2 seats in the Senate.
Except for the little technicality called the "electoral vote", Democrats won the last election across the board.
No doubt, if the vulgarian had not been successful with his crude character assassinations and voter suppression efforts by the Republicans, those numbers would have been much larger, even with the efforts of James Comey and the Russians.
Democrats and Americans across the land should not view the Republicans as winners in the last election, let alone winners of a mandate or a landslide.
The election was not "fair and square". Republicans claimed a victory but it was at the cost of their soul, if they ever had one?

(9,897 posts)IF Trump and the GOP are allowed to proceed with their plans to gut the social safety net, you can bet that social unrest will result and that the dictator and his flying monkeys will propose "emergency measures" to "calm the population"?
I bet that in the next "election" that Trump tops 90% of the counted ballots...mark it down now and refer back to it 4 years from now...

(25,920 posts)It's been around from the very beginning, and how we elect the President.
Yeah, I've long thought it should be abolished, but we're stuck with it.

(25,920 posts)It's how we've elected Presidents starting with George Washington. Really.

(25,920 posts)It's in the Constitution. It's how every single President has been elected.
It's also there because the framers didn't foresee the rise of political parties.
If you think it's wrong, start working to change it. Convince enough state legislatures to hold a Constitutional convention, or enough Senators and Representatives to propose the amendment needed.
Throwing hissy fits on DU doesn't accomplish anything.

(90,370 posts)... technicality at all.
it was a racist technicality and a techincality it is no matter if it was applied here.

(25,920 posts)from the way I would use it.
It's in the Constitution. If it's a technicality, then so is every single clause that's in the Constitution.
I have long thought the EC should be done away with. But I don't spend a lot of time complaining about it. It's also important that people here realize that there is simply no way whatsoever that Republicans, who have now benefitted twice from the EC, are going to consider giving it up.

(1,629 posts)We're not "stuck" with anything. But as soon as you believe that... it precludes looking for ways to abolish it.
Let's remember some history. The nation was "stuck" with a dysfunctional and reformproof Articles Of Confederation. It could not be reformed under the rules of unanimous consent. So the Framers gutted it and started over... but their amendment system is also virtually reformproof
Why is it that we feel bound to a dysfunctional system when the Framers did not?

(25,920 posts)And given that the Rs have benefitted twice this century so far from it, given they control the Congress, given that there are more Republican controlled state legislatures and Governors, yeah, we're stuck with it into the foreseeable future.

(789 posts).... who was gullible enough to believe he was sincere. Unfortunately, enough of them voted in his favor.
So now, because of GOP gerrymandering and the way our election laws are written, this tin-foil hat wearing fool will occupy the White House.
Our answer to this BS? Well, as Bob Marley so eloquently put it: "Get up, Stand up, Stand up for your Rights! Get up Stand up, Don't give up the Fight!"
