(20,219 posts)I don't have a good response because it so wrong. It's wrong on a molecular level....how do you introduce reality to someone who isn't paying any attention to it?
Bernardo de La Paz
(49,060 posts)Point that out to them.
Businesses that ignore reality go under. Ask them if they see many VHS rental stores. Which business is going up and which down: Blockbuster or NetFlix?
Newton's Theory of Gravity is only a theory, but we don't test it by walking off the top of ten-story buildings. We know that it accords with reality to a very great degree of precision.
BlancheSplanchnik
(20,219 posts)I'll try that...just the first sentence. Keep it simple.

(100,118 posts)Since the election I've seriously been wondering - what is it people hate about liberalism? What is it that sets Trump fans off that makes them hate us? I've been seeing this crap from Trumplodites on a daily basis since the election and the hate speech and name calling that is coming out of Trump supporters is unlike anything I've ever seen. We're going from a guy who's brought out the best in people to a guy who's brought out the absolute worst in people. We're going from an administration that prides itself on fitness and peak physical performance to a guy who serves KFC and Wendys on his private jet. I think we need to answer that question before 2018 and find out what it is that sets people off.

(20,219 posts)I know I once was taking a pottery class and there was this woman in it. We were friendly, would hang and chat.
She once said, "geee you're really nice for a liberal". I thanked her and chuckled and said something along the line of "yeah, my friends are pretty much the same way".
She said she'd actually never spoken to a liberal before!
I don't have the answers, but I feel pretty strongly that the hate-bubble of propaganda that is broadcast everywhere, repeatedly 24/7 for yearrrsss is a real big part of it.
Bernardo de La Paz
(49,060 posts)Politics is at least two-dimensional, so the "liberal vs conservative" rhetoric is inadequate on the face of it straight from the get-go.
A further problem is that many people indulge in binary thinking. They view themselves as "pretty good" but think that any liberal must be really very extremely bad because, you know, they're liberal.
Both liberals and conservatives, of all stripes, will fall back to a base of justifying their positions on the basis of Freedom.
Social conservatives hate liberals (especially social liberals) because to varying degrees they think they are decadent condemnable creatures who are leading society to the breakdown of the family, destruction of morals, and to hellfire and brimstone ala Sodom and Gomorrah. Some of them haven't even got to the point of accepting miscegenation (race mixing through marriage).
Fiscal conservatives hate liberals ultimately because of viewing things through the lens of the idea of voluntary versus involuntary charity. To varying degrees, they view government spending on poor people and social causes in any form (like public education) as taking from responsible people and giving it to irresponsible people. They frequently have an exaggerated view of the percentage of income that comfortably well off people spend on charity, or would spend if there were almost no taxes. They also tend to have no clue about the cumulative and synergistic effects of a thousand little disadvantages people might experience growing up and in their lives.
Of course, too many social liberals and fiscal liberals have correspondingly distorted views of conservatives.
Social liberals appeal to individual freedom, personal liberty.
Social conservatives appeal to freedom against the forces of darkness, as they see it.
Fiscal liberals appeal to the freedom from crushing disadvantages, for example FDR's third freedom: freedom from want.
Fiscal conservatives appeal to the personal freedom of giving to charitable causes only as much and in ways a person chooses.

(613 posts)There's more than one excellent ad to consider. I absolutely support what I see in the State Farm ad, but my research has revealed that State Farm is a long-time member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), which promotes extreme, conservative laws opposing everything we Dems believe in. They write laws and distribute them to states with the objective of overturning laws which protect laborers, weaken gun regulations, and so forth. And the company has chaired ALEC in the past. I'm very seriously considering moving my car and homeowners insurance from State Farm because of what I discovered. Obviously, each person has to decide for himself or herself, but I wish this ad actually typified their philosophy. It truly does not.

(613 posts)I had exactly the same response when I read State Farm's corporate response to their membership in ALEC. Complete bullshit! They're in it up to their eyeballs, and they're using misleading language to avoid their considerable responsibility for promoting an ultra - conservative agenda. I think DU members should be aware of these facts. Thanks for posting your response.

(14,858 posts)I'm personally a little creeped-out by how young the woman looks. I assume that she wouldn't look like a 14 year old if her hands weren't covering part of her face?
Or am I so old now that I can't judge age worth a crap anymore? It's possible!

(7,539 posts)I think it's the gym shorts and t-shirt that make her read like she's in high school and his clothing registers as grown-up. Those actors could possibly both early to mid-twenties.

(7,911 posts)...that she was a young-looking 20-something. It happens, you know. When my sister was a grad student in her 20s a cop pulled her over because he thought she just HAD to be too young to be driving a car, and the daughter of a friend of mine who was 22 looked no more than 13. That was 15 years ago, but I remember quite clearly having a hard time believing she was as old as she was.
I guess maybe I just always assume the best instead of jumping to the conclusion that there's something wrong.

(34,510 posts)controversy = free advertising) they could re shoot the photo with:
1) the ring box facing the right direction
2) she would be dressed in a way similar to the way he is, e.g., jeans and a casual shirt instead of being substantially more bare
3) place them in a setting other than a bedroom.
It doesn't offend me (except as a feminist I don't like it when women are less covered up than men in the same setting--there's a long history of why that's a problem that has been discussed elsewhere) but there's no need to take a risk on annoying other viewers for other reasons.

(7,911 posts)I grew up in the poor section of a tiny backward "very Christian" town that discriminated equally against blacks, Puerto Ricans, and Irish Catholics. As an Irish Catholic, my best friends, schoolmates, fellow Cub Scouts, growing up were blacks and Puerto Ricans. Race didn't mean diddly squat to us back then, and it still doesn't.
Oh, and in fact, my great-grandmother on my mother's side was a black Jamaican who married my white French great grandfather. I guess it was quite the scandal at the time. So I guess that makes me 1/16th black anyway. So, no, race doesn't mean diddly squat to me.

(2,949 posts)State Farm is an ultra conservative company, used to send us employees emails around election time about why the conservative candidate was the "best" choice. I used to forward them to the Democratic candidate. Their ads are created to boost sales in the demographic that they feel they are lacking in.
Never got insurance from them, way too overpriced. I just got hit by a State Farm insured driver. Never saw an agent, was dealing with call centers the whole time.
