Perhaps you could pose a question to DU:
"I see so many good progressives pleading that, I, a Black man, and/or my LGBTQ, Other Abled, female, and/or ethnic friends and acquaintances, find space in our heart to empathize with the white working class trump voter.
Okay, cool. I will search my heart ... but only after you respond to this:
In the immediate aftermath of the 2016 election, and since progressives on DU, and elsewhere, seem so struck by the words of "The Greats", ponder this:
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. {i.e., ignore the clear and obvious racist, misogynistic, hetero-sexist, xenophobic language of uber (though demonstratively failed) -establishment figure, trump ... because they are mad at the "establishment"} ...
And,
In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
So tell me ... what right have you to even suggest that I/we empathize with them or listen to you?
Thanks,
...

(99,719 posts)I will give a concrete example... I just got back from Las Vegas. I have a lot more empathy for the maids, bus boys, and dishwashers, most of whom are Hispanic or Pacific Islanders, who are trying to get Trump to unionize his Las Vegas hotel than the union workers who voted for him, knowing he is a union hater. He is fighting the unionization of his hotel tooth and nail. In fact the NLRB is involved.
Trump voters want help for " me" and not for "thee".

(185 posts)Poor, deluded and stupid is to be pitied. And evil does win when the good do nothing. Don't listen to us, speak up with us. I have only been here a short time but it is the call for unity that I hear here most. OK, there is a lot of sniping, but mostly a call for a common front. The plea is to join. To speak. To be heard.
How do you the no they'll react when they realize they've been had?
It be nice if we got their votes or kept them home. I don't know how to do that without engagement.
