we learn today that VanSusteren, Kelly, Carlson are all going to NBC.
I have long said MSNBC was worse than Fox. They were STEALTH right wing.
Today they become no longer stealth.
For those of you hoping Joy Reid would get a serious slot, forget it.

(2,805 posts)She too is useless. Gawker used to have a writer that would call her hilarious names such as "Recently, lemon-scented floor mop Gretchen Carlson invited ...". They were numerous and funny.
Sadly she is apparently very smart but plays dumb. I don't know what part she would play in a new role away from FOXNews.

(39,343 posts)J/k Stinky, of course the "news" is propaganda of for and by the corporations.
A big effort I'm undertaking this year is finding true news stories/ journalists/ publications.
I'm liking ProPublica so far as one outlet.

(10,023 posts)There is very little news on non-cable news channels. The people that watch tend to skew older judging by who advertises during the national nightly news shows. After about 5 to ten snippets of editorialized sound bites and tragedies of the day the rest is infotainment type banter. I do not watch it, but occasionally hear the "reporting" when my husband has it on. I do not have cable tv at home, but when I do see it, there it does not seem much better. Seems a lot of preaching to the choir for both sides depending on station/anchor/moderator and stupid equivalencies instead of reporting non-debatable facts is now the norm. My nearly 20 year old son and his friends never watch tv. If his friends are engaged in news at all, they get it from the internet. Depending on what sites and privacy setting you use, the "news" you get on the web can continue to be skewed, or worse yet, completely false. This is very concerning for the future

(4,522 posts)In total day, CNNs median viewer age was 61 compared to 67 for Fox. But in primetime the difference was starker; CNNs average was 59 while Fox News averaged 68.
MSNBC ranked second in both categories with a median age of 63 during the day and in primetime.
The advertiser-coveted demo is 25-54, leaving CNNs audience closest to that segment.

(36,926 posts)For now, I am done with MSM snooze.
I've not watched since Maddow gave Bill Clinton a thumbs down because he brought up when he met Hillary and how she turned him down at first etc. Bill was trying to humanize Hillary - that's all and Maddow had a hissy. I was done with her after that. I thought to myself, "Whose side are you on?"
I don't even watch Lawrence anymore. They have all become irrelevant to what's going on in the political world - except Joy Reid who is just phenomenal. She is so smart and so on point, doesn't spin, doesn't sugar-coat - just tells it like it is. I also like the fact that she doesn't let her right-wing guests get away with saying crazy stuff.

(3,922 posts)We still have a few good print media outlets but the best of the TV news is the "comedy" category: Real Time, John Oliver, Trevor Noah, and Samantha Bee.
The others have all gone soft. Btw, did you hear abut the pop star's technical glitch on NYE? Big news!

(23,677 posts)Fox News host Megyn Kelly has been hired away by NBC, where she will play a triple role in which she will host her own daytime news and discussion program, anchor an in-depth Sunday night news show and take regular part in the networks special political programming and other big-event coverage.
There are many reasons to be concerned with Kellys move, among them her history of using white racial anxiety to bolster her career, her willingness to defend and promote anti-gay "hate groups," and her ability to use a patina of unearned credibility to push out the same right-wing lies that her Fox colleagues spout. But among them must certainly be her decision to wait until after the election to reveal key facts about Trump's interactions with her network.

(3,702 posts)I get why the studios are going right wing nut job - Fox is such a damn moneymaker and that whole if you can't beat them join them (with their own people), and an audience that likes to be spoonfed.
But are there no independent voices left? In this world of social media and internet - print and cable TV matter less and less. The Young Turks pick up some of that - but honestly - are there no serious journalists who are outraged?

(13,041 posts)i stopped watching NBC/MSNBC when they hired the syrupy Katie Couric, and even more so after they fired Ann Curry. Her replacement and Matt Liar disgusted me. The MSM has become all about sensationalism. The same goes for ABC - it's getting there.
Kelly, Carlson and VS are all opportunists - whoever writes them the bigger check. I particularly hate the way Kelly flaunted her sexuality and only stood up to Fox' culture of sexism when Carlson hit Ailes with her lawsuit.

(14,167 posts)Remember the "Lean Forward" ads on MSNBC? Yeah, that hope that we'd have a network that espoused progressive values is pretty much dead.
Rachel's towing of the company line only served as further proof. When she attacked Bill Clinton's speech at the Democratic National Convention, I wondered whose side she was on.
We really need capital, financing, and sound leadership to help get our own network off the ground.
True_Blue
(3,063 posts)Ratings must be really bad if they're trying to copy the worst news network ever. This will definitely not help their ratings any. Progressives are not going to watch Fox lite and Fox viewers are not going abandon Fox for NBC. Really stupid move.
McCamy Taylor
(19,240 posts)Fox News will have to fawn all over him--which means courting a demographic that includes people not attractive to advertisers. I.e. trailer park trash, outlaws, deadbeat dads, biker wannabe's and a bunch of idiots without education or disposable income.
Old school conservatives who actually have the money to buy a Lexus or BMW will turn off Fox in disgust. And so, NBC is gonna court them. Makes no difference to me at this point who is attacking Trump as long as they attack him. He is a clear and present danger to all of us.
Recall that GE and the Pentagon are two heads of the same animal. I expect to see lots of military criticism of Trump. That will align nicely with the New Conservatives.
