Everyone needs to have his or her congressional representative and Senators in their contact directory and use them frequently to protest every ugly bill that comes up. Every time. Every bill, and encourage others to do the same. That applies to Republicans and Democrats alike. Let them hear us roar when they try to shove something up our backsides.
