Like so many who consider themselves rebels, rogues, outsiders, etc. they only see the part they want to see. If you remember, Reagan used Bruce Springsteen's "Born In the USA" as a campaign song. Anyone who bothered to listen to the lyrics would figure out it was not a patriotic song, not according to the way they view patriotism. Same thing with the Gadsden flag. They just see it as a big middle finger to the world, without knowing anything of its history.
