Schumer: My views are exactly the same as Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders

Schumer: 'We're not compromising for its own sake'
Eugene Scott
CNN

"The only way we're going to work with him is if he moves completely in our direction and abandons his Republican colleagues. That's not going to happen very often," the New York Democrat and incoming Senate minority leader told CNN's Dana Bash. "And I'm even less optimistic that any of that could happen seeing his Cabinet choices."

"Of course, I'd like to make a deal. If we could get together on immigration and have a path to citizenship. Just as I was happy to work with John McCain and Lindsey Graham, I'll be happy to work with Donald Trump," he said. "But he hasn't even ... come close to talking about that, so we're going to end up opposing him on those issues."

"My views are exactly the same as Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Both of them have said -- both of them have said the same exact thing: If we can work with him and be true to our principles, we're not going to reject it," he said. "But overall, we're sticking to our principles. We're not compromising for its own sake."

"Our principles are going to be our guiding light," Schumer added.

I think most of us are mature enough and experienced enough to know that we're not going to win every fight over the next however many years - or even very many fights. But goddammit if we're going to sit idly by and not fight everything we can. Look at the Republicans and their years-long fights against voting rights, women's health, the environment, working people's wages, and so many other issues. Have they won every fight? No, but they've sure heartened their mean-spirited, cruel constituents with the ferocity and consistency of their efforts. And they have won significant victories in disenfranchising people, killing women, polluting the air and water, and keeping poor people poor.

Are any of those outcomes favored by the majority of the people? Of course not. But they're big goals of the Republicans, and they've persuaded enough people to buy into one or more of those issues so that whenever they get their blood-soaked hands on the levers of power, they can enact their agenda and say that it's the will of the people, and that they have a mandate for their horrible policies.

People who subscribe to the Democratic platform will turn out to vote for politicians who are in there battling for these issues, even if we don't rack up a victory every time. Even when Republicans lose a battle, they fight on and vow to stick with it, even in the face of popular opposition. Democrats can do that, too, and we have the advantage of actually representing the views of the majority of voters.

As a life long Democrat,I will back my Party but reserve the right to criticize it's Leadership Persons. And with Shumer, flowed his path from the House to the Senate, and when Mr. Obama came along, well Chuckie was their for the Photo Op,which he can not resist a Camera, and that was it. He has his agenda and that is all he cares about.

Seriously, let's show up. Job #1 is the rallies on the 15th. That's as much about showing Trump we mean business as it is giving feedback to the party.

I will go with the Brooklyn Boys (voted for Sanders AND Schumer) over the Queens Boy, even though my Republican husband of 42 years is Queens born. Don't want to start a boroughs war, but as a Manhattan Native, I will go with Brooklyn and "Da Bronx" over Queens, or horror, Staten Island, any day.

Go Bernie and Chuckie. Give em hell.
