Obama Urges Student Activism Ahead of Loan Deadline
Congress is facing a looming deadline to extend low-interest rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans or plunge millions of students into deeper debt. The rates were reduced to 3.4 percent in 2007 but will double on July 1st for new loans unless Congress intervenes. On Thursday, President Obama urged a group of students visiting the White House to pressure lawmakers.

President Obama: "You keep this going. Dont stop until its actually done. There is nothing more powerful than millions of voices that are calling for change, and all of your voices can make a difference. So keep telling Congress to do whats right, to get this done. Tell them now is not the time to double interest rates on your student loans. Tell them to double down on an investment in a strong and secure middle class and that means your education."

(28,498 posts)2. Why can't students get near 0.0% loans, just like banks and Wall Street?
It seems a better investment than padding the pockets of a few billionaires...

saying is Obama is raising the interest rates on student loans and that the Gov cannot afford to pay for the loans any way.
Even a number of the RW idiots said they had kids with student loans and they did not care that they were going to get screwed.
Morons the lot of em.

A lost cause to urge student activism when schools are out for the summer.

With less than 10 days left for Congress to prevent interest rates on student loans from doubling, President Obama calls on students to tell lawmakers:
"Double down on America's future, don't double my rates."
