Army Leaker Chelsea Manning on Obamas Short List for Commutation

President Obama has put Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst serving a 35-year sentence for leaking classified material, on his short list for a possible commutation, a Justice Department source told NBC News.

A decision could come as soon as Wednesday for Manning, who has tried to commit suicide twice this year and went on a hunger strike in a bid for gender reassignment surgery.

"I have more hope right now than I have the entire time since she was sentenced," Manning's aunt, Deborah Manning, told NBC News.

"I do think it's the last hope for a while."

She should be released. If not now, then maybe a couple of years.

If the prisoner avoids needless drama, release should be possible after eight years, in 2021, at which time Manning will be about 34

The idea of an army recruit dumping three-quarters of a milliion documents to a foreign national must have alarmed not only army professionals but also the intelligence community: these sectors will quite naturally want Manning to serve more-than-minimal time simply to discourage future recruits from copycat activity

Obama's centrist instincts mean that he will give such views real consideration

The whole story, frankly, smells like a political game: the rightwing gets to be outraged by this "report" that Obama is "considering" a commutation, and then the libertarians get to be outraged that no commutation results
