GOP Oversight Chair Admits There Is No Evidence Of White House Involvement In Fast And Furious

Last week, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) claimed that the White House decision to invoke executive privilege to prevent the release of some documents related to the Fast and Furious investigation indicated some sort of admission of a White House cover-up. Today, pressed by Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) admitted that there is absolutely no evidence to back up Boehners allegation:
WALLACE: Do you have any evidence that White House officials were involved in these decisions, that they knowingly misled Congress, and are involved in a cover-up?
ISSA: No, we dont. And what we are seeking are documents that we know to exist, February 4 to December [2011] that are in fact about [murdered Border Patrol agent] Brian Terrys murder, who knew, and why people were lying about it
WALLACE: I want to be clear, because weve got to get out, no evidence that the White House is involved in the cover up?

(6,160 posts)So, why are they charging Holder with Contempt of Congress?
It is my understanding that Holder is forbidden by law from disclosing those documents.
What the hell?

(31,706 posts)Looks like Issa is getting some cold feet...or even more to his character, he's passing the buck. For the past year and a half he's been under a lot of pressure to find something/anything to paint this Administration as corrupt. F&F has been his best hope and it's been a half-assed investigation. He knows his case isn't against those in this administration but in the previous one and if he pushes too far this fiasco could backfire on him. His job was to get the ball rolling...he's done that, it's now in Boner's court to see if he follows through with a full contempt vote. If all falls apart...which is likely...he's got a fall back position.
This deal is a lot of noise during the election cycle...totally political. The "base" has been howling for some red meat and Issa threw them some. The truth is this "contempt" is going nowhere and will never be litigated. The endgame here is to try to push Holder out before the elections and hoping that poutrage would do the job. It's failed. Next stupid rushpublican trick...

(14,887 posts)He bankrolled the recall here in California, strutting around when it qualified, thinking his reward was HE would be the next governor. The rethugs said 'hang on there a minute, darrell, we got an actor instead'. Issa was very nearly crying on TV when he said he wouldn't run in the recall. Now the rethugs have used him again. Again w/ no thanks or reward. Guess he likes being a door mat.

(30,058 posts)Our debt continues to rise because not enough revenues are being collected and repubs continue to neglect the responsibilities they have taken an oath to do in order to have another witch hunt. Think NRA is going to use fast and furious to add to their ability to raise more money, you bet.
Are they going to give the background on why there was not any prosecution in Maricopa county? Doubt it, in fact the Maricopa attorney and some of his deputies have been disbarred. Apparently the corruption in this county is large, many working together with Sheriff Joe Arpiao. Who is going after Arpiao, why the DOJ and this is a way to punch back and hope the DOJ forgets Arpiao's actions.

This program began under Bush. Agents in Arizona continued it after it had been stopped elsewhere. The leadership in the Obama administration did not know that the agents in Arizona were doing it. Someone was killed. The Obama administration started an investigation, stopped the program and have fired some of those involved but are continuing the investigation.
Issa wants to draw attention to this program because it could be interpreted to demonstrate the effect that an influx of guns causes in a society in which drug cartels have taken hold and poverty is widespread. (That could be us if we continue to outsource jobs and bail out banks to keep the oligarchy rich and powerful.)
