Now that Trump is in the White House, the media is aiming its attention at negative coverage of some of his actions. Finally. Before the election, the press, in general, spent most of its time covering Donald Trump's rallies, speeches and candidacy in a more or less positive way and almost constantly. He was big news, because he was so over the top most of the time.
Hillary's campaign, which was far more traditional, got short shrift in the press coverage. It wasn't interesting enough, the media decided. So, Trump avoided spending his money on advertising and other campaigning. He didn't have to. The media reported every word he said and covered every rally and speech he made, live and non-stop.
They didn't cover Hillary Clinton in the same way at all. In many ways, unbalanced media coverage of the campaigns had an influence on turnout and may have helped Trump to have his illegitimate Electoral College victory.
So, now that Trump is the only news, the media are looking at his negatives, and paying attention to things like the Women's Marches. But, are they doing that too late? I think so. The 2016 presidential election campaign really destroyed my respect for the Fourth Estate in this country. They opted for what attracted viewers and readers, and ignored the rest.
The media focused its attention on the spectacle, and failed to report on the lies, half-truths and negative stories about Trump. It sold papers and magazines and attracted viewers. It sold ads. They ignored Hillary Clinton, pretty much, so her campaign had to attempt to compensate for that with advertising. Trump needed no huge advertising budget because the media advertised for him at no charge and almost endlessly.
Can the media earn the people's trust again by finally focusing on the obvious incompetency and fascist tendencies of the Trump administration? I think they cannot, at least completely. I will always mistrust the media from this time forward, whatever they decide to do. Our media failed us in 2016. They're going to have to work very hard to regain my trust.
Sorry, US media. You screwed the pooch during the 2016 campaign. We no longer trust you. I'm more than sad about that. Good luck getting my trust back.

(9,127 posts)The reporters, the editors, and the suits in the executive suites have forfeited my trust by their disgraceful behavior this last election cycle. They have betrayed the interests of the American people by their arrogance, their indolence, and their failure to treat the Trump campaign as something more than a tool for higher ratings. All too many of them deserve to be held in the same contempt as the liars and toadies that worked for Milosevic in Serbia and Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

(146,325 posts)We'll see how the press handles their poor coverage in the past. If they consistently report the news fairly and accurately report Trump's failings and misbehavior, I'll reconsider in a couple of years.
It's up to them, as far as I'm concerned.

(9,127 posts)Believe that whatever they tell you is incomplete, at least some of what they're telling you is false, and let them WORK to convince you that what they're saying might really be true, instead of taking their reportage in good faith
Faith requires trust, and in the case of the US lame-stream corporate media, it'll have to be EARNED anew. Right now, I don't trust them.

(13,110 posts)They can never make up for giving Trump 2 Billion dollars worth of free airtime.
They can never make up for allowing Trump to lie over and over.
They can never make up for not covering the violence at his rallies.
They can never make up for showing an empty podium over and over.
They can never make up for ignoring Bernie.
They can never make up for discussing Hillary's e-mails nonstop.

(33,189 posts)If this had been a singular lapse by a single entity, maybe.
However, it has been a long term concerted effort across the whole spectrum of outlets for the past at least 20 years. (SEE: The Iraq War, as one of many examples.)
To achieve a real turn around we'd need to see a whole lot of new faces... Some faces, like for instance, Amy Goodman, who have been marginalized, smeared, and ostracized from the main stream.

Which shows they are more about misguided attempts to boost their $$$ than any obligation to truth, reality, or ethics.
It should be a lesson in who really controls the message and it's not the journalists. (If there are really any of those left in the so-called MSM.)

(58,698 posts)much more will be done by the Repubs in Congress and Trump. It remains to be seen if we can turn the political tide in '18, and media assistance in the form of honesty and truth would certainly help there, and would intensify the RW whining about media bias.
I at least sense a little bit of a turn on a couple of the networks. The coverage of the women's marches was a positive. But it's gonna take a lot to make up for '16. This all started when the networks turned the news desks into profit centers. So far, there has been far too much truthiness in media and not enough truth.
