The trick is the slight but pejorative re-phrasing: "alternative facts" conveys a message that whatever was said was actually factual; but the almost-quote "alternative reality" connotes insanity

Somehow, each lie they tell is treated in the media as though it's the first time they've lied, with no context or reference to dozens of other provable lies.
