North America Is Poised For Huge Natural Gas Shock

http://www.businessinsider.com/north-america-is-poised-for-huge-natural-gas-shock-2012-6

It has long been our position at The Automatic Earth that North America is collectively dreaming with regard to unconventional natural gas. While gas is undeniably there, the Energy Returned On Energy Invested (EROEI) is dramatically lower than for conventional supplies. The critical nature of EROEI has been widely ignored, but will ultimately determine what is and is not an energy source, and shale gas is going to fail the test.

As we pointed out in Get Ready for the North American Gas Shock in July 2011, the natural gas situation is not what it seems at all:
'The shale gas bubble is a perfect example of the irrationality of markets, the power of perverse short-term incentives, the driving force of momentum-chasing, the dominance of perception over reality in determining prices, and the determination for a herd to stampede over a cliff all at once.'

The perception of a gas glut has driven prices so low that none of the participants are making money (at least not by producing gas) or creating value. We see a familiar story of excessive debt, and the hollowing out of productive companies dead set on pursuing a mirage.

Many industry insiders know perfectly well that the prospects for recovering substantial amounts of gas are poor, and that the industry is structured as a ponzi scheme. Still, there has been money to be made in the short term by flipping land leases and building infrastructure to handle gas.
The hype is so extreme that those who fall for it contemplate, in all seriousness, North America becoming a natural gas exporting powerhouse, and a threat to Australian LNG producers, or to Russia's Gazprom.

I have 2 gas wells on our property from 2009 and the royalties from them generate about 6 grand a month. If it were not for those wells I would not be able to survive my life style.

We live in a heavy gas-drilling area and wells are being capped because the price of gas is so low.

A lot of us here are unemployed and when we can find work it's at minimum wage, so we end up working for a year to pull in what you are being given in 2 months! And to be able to spend it all so lavishly that you can barely afford to go without....

Good for you.

Calling oil wells "ponzi schemes" is labeling them exactly for what they are. For short term gain, the earth and humanity is being sacrificed. Worshiping Mammon and all that.

When the last human takes his last breath, probably about 2120 when the avg. low temperature in the arctic reaches 100 degrees and atmospheric concentration of O2 is too low to support life, he might not be thinking about profits.

Destroying the environment in an irreparable way in exchange for money. Don't whine when your water becomes flammable and your land collapses underneath you.

Not sure what the comment was about so if you could explain it to me I would be much appreciated.
Is it the 6 grand a month? I have neighbors with over 200 acres 4 wells and they are knocking down 14 grand a month plus free heat.
My water is fine I have it tested every year I can see no negatives in this kind of situation. Jealousy just might be YOUR problem.

Are they vertical or horizontal?

Where and how is your toxic waste disposed of?

What is your royalty interest/share?

Your profile says NC and the google tells me that there are no oil or gas wells in NC.

My profile says NC because that is where I hang most of the time(Lake Lure area and yes it is a wonderful summer house). I live near Erie, PA where they have been drilling all over the place for years.

Seems to me that the only people who bitch about all this gas/oil drilling are the ones who do not have a well.

I have neighbors who have under 50 acres and they don't get considered (50 acres or more to have a well) they started treating us like we had a disease as soon as they heard we received the royalties and the free gas for heat. These so called neighbors can kiss my a$$ I don't need them!!!

So with that said I am very sorry that my good fortune has offended any one here.

it is that a capitalist economic system rapes resources and encourages behaviors that result in only a few holding so much wealth. That is the problem - and it is happening worldwide. Billionaires living in extreme luxury while others are homeless - that we support an economic system that allows such inequity is ridiculous. It is not being jealous (I am well-off as well -not 1% but pretty close to that), it is realizing that this capitalism is morally indefensible.

Current gas prices do not pay to recover the costs of exploration and drilling. Companies are drilling only because the leases have deadlines for drilling or the leases expire.

The flow in fracked wells drops off rapidly relative to conventional gas wells.

Drilling is continuing where there is oil along with the gas, but the rig count for fracked wells has dropped off dramatically.
