My co-worker got shafted by my workplace and I unwillingly helped them to do it.

I work at a hotel and had been on vacation time all last week. Well I should have been on vacation until tonight but instead I was called yesterday morning to come in a day early and work my night shift because the other night shift worker was in an accident and the general manager and assistant manager had been at the hotel almost all night and if they had to be at the hotel Sunday night as well it would be hard for them to do night shift as well as payroll the next morning.

I went in being a good sports because I figure they are calling me off of vacation early because my co-worker is injured and needed time off. I ask if I could have the vacation day I was "giving back" on Thursday making it a long weekend to finish some work I had to do around the house and the gas budget was already tight I didn't think I don't think I will have enough money for the full week.

I was told that since the schedule was already posted he couldn't give me the day off but because I was a good sport they would have a surprise for me at the workplace (a gift card which I figured would help out with the gas issue). I was told this by the assistant manager when I called back asking them for the 3 day request.

Well get to the work place to find no "surprise" is there and I also find out that these people I work for have no conscious or respect for people. Here is what happen with my co-worker:

Saturday night as she was driving to work she was hit by a drunk driver who couldn't figure out how to get out of his own car. My co-worker is rear ended badly shaken sore and trying to talk to the cops in between calls to A) the work place calling off after what happened B) her mother letting her know she is okay but she needs to go to the hospital.

The staff person called the General manager telling him that she had been in an accident coming into work. General Manager nor Assistant Manager do not want to come in a cover so the General Manager is calling the co-worker who was still at the accident scene begging her to come in. He even said they would pay for a cab to bring her into work and take her home.

The girl needed to be checked out by the hospital and told him no. She was at the hospital until 5:30am in the morning and was given a doctor's excuse by the hospital.

So instead of being grateful one of his workers did not die these two "Managers" decide to "Punish" co-worker by calling her off last night so she lost pay.

IF I had known they called off my co-worker to punish her and not because she was on bed rest or something like I would not have gone.

Question becomes does my co-worker have any ground to stand on or she has no way of fighting back what our employer did to her

1. Sounds like a clear case of retaliation. My advice would be to look up the National Employment

no reason at all. It can and does happen. That is why if you are not in a state that has that then fight like hell to keep it out. It hurts employees. It is a sad situation what they did to her. Surely she has some action she can take.
