Scientists' March on WashingtonThe responsible application of science to government

What is the Scientists' March on Washington
Welcome! We want to thank you all for your incredible outpouring of support for this march. We are working to schedule a March for Science on DC and across the United States. We have not settled on a date yet but will do so as quickly as possible and announce it here.
Although this will start with a march, we hope to use this as a starting point to take a stand for science in politics. Slashing funding and restricting scientists from communicating their findings (from tax-funded research!) with the public is absurd and cannot be allowed to stand as policy. This is a non-partisan issue that reaches far beyond people in the STEM fields and should concern anyone who believes in empirical research and science.
There are certain things that we accept as facts with no alternatives. The Earth is becoming warmer due to human action. The diversity of life arose by evolution. Politicians who devalue expertise risk making decisions that do not reflect reality and must be held accountable. An American government that ignores science to pursue ideological agendas endangers the world.
Please bear with us as pull together our mission statement and further details. Many more updates to come on Monday.

(9,090 posts)because it supports 6 limbaugh stations
Students can amplify protests at state capitols and town halls w/out leaving campus.
here are 88 universities that would be good places for scientists to protest , with the number of limbaugh stations they broadcast sports on and support - all support trump, global warming denial, and defunding public education. these stations use their university associations to attract advertising to pay for their support for trump/republicans and it's basically free for them.
this was a major factor in republican success the last 30 years. without these major stations the talk radio monopoly would fall apart and republicans couldnt do shit

(40,416 posts)Here is their statement in advance of the announcement.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will host a live international news conference at 10 a.m. EST/1500 GMT on January 26, 2017, to announce whether the minute hand of the historic Doomsday Clock will be adjusted. The decision is made by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Science and Security Board in consultation with the Board of Sponsors, which includes 15 Nobel Laureates.
Factors influencing the 2017 deliberations regarding any adjustment that may be made to the Doomsday Clock include: a rise in strident nationalism worldwide, President Donald Trumps comments on nuclear arms and climate issues prior to his inauguration on January 20th, a darkening global security landscape that is colored by increasingly sophisticated technology, and a growing disregard for scientific expertise.
In January 2016, the Doomsday Clocks minute hand did not change, remaining at three minutes before midnight, the closest it has been to midnight since the early days of above-ground hydrogen bomb testing. The Clock was changed in 2015 from five to three minutes to midnight.

(28,394 posts)Do scientists tend to be non-partisan? The ones I knew in our old neighborhood worked for Westinghouse and were overwhelmingly republican.

(14,856 posts)Among the general public, moderates and independents ranked higher than any party or ideology. But among scientists, there were considerably more Democrats (55%) than independents (32%) and Republicans (6%) put together...
The Republican Party has a number of leaders within it who have challenged the accuracy of scientific findings on issues such as climate change, evolution and stem cell research, Keeter told the Huffington Post.
Edit: I read it was a more of an even split back in the 60's, if that's what you mean by old neighborhood.

(1,979 posts)I remember when they did the take over of the congressional house a few years back and we were able to donate to local restaurants and they supplied water, coffee, some food items, etc. If it is going to be cold in Washington and someone is organizing this, we may have an opportunity to not only help the scientists, but also to help the local small business owners who are in SUPPORT of this cause.
I can try to do this later - I'm at work so cannot contact (actually just peeking in for a sec)

(2,596 posts)Actually, I think dissidents and protesters are now in serious jeopardy of being seized as threats to homeland security/enemy combatants, etc. and sent to Guantanamo for indefinite incarceration.
I've never seen a dictator, whether he's from a banana republic, a Soviet communist, a German Nazi or an Italian fascist, a Middle Eastern potentate not have dissenters or the royal "opponents" thrown into jails without due process (if they're lucky) or shot down like a fleeing convicted felon in a prison break.
The fact that this cretin has - just 3 days in - imposed gag orders on not just these EPA scientists, but others in federal agencies (what's next - the CDC for fuck's sake!??), means he's already started to rule like Putin. We're all fucked as shit. Not just Americans, but the entire planet and its population human and otherwise. Christ on a crutch. What the fuck have we done, allowed to be done?

(8,732 posts)The Scientists march on Washington website that is referenced on their Facebook page, I did a little digging and didn't get a lot of answers:

They are hiding the name of who registered the domain name and their organization...the domain name was created on the January 21st of this year though.

(53,061 posts)There are a large number of scientists who work for the DOD on each base to ensure that bases comply with best environmental practices.
The local leaders resisted the scientists at first but in the end not only complied with the extra level of accountability. There are, for example, more than 100 scientists working at Camp Pendleton.
Once the leadership of the executive branch is anti science there are hundreds of little pockets that can be attacked and no one will ever find out about it.
It will take years to over come the damage.
