"The World’s Last Worm: A Dreaded Disease Nears Eradication"

A dreaded tropical disease is on the verge of eradication

A parasite that has plagued the human race since antiquity is poised to become the second human disease after smallpox to be eradicated. “We are approaching the demise of the last guinea worm who will ever live on earth,” says former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Center has spearheaded the eradication effort.

So far the efforts have resulted in a 99 percent reduction in infections, says Sharon Roy of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 1986 there were 3.5 million cases, as compared with only 1,060 in 2011 and a mere five as of the first few months of 2012.

since then. I really think he was cut off at the knees by the Democratic establishment of the time. He was also unable to get his message out past the big three TV networks. I think if DU had been around back then, Jimmy carter would have gone down in history as one of the great ones instead of a might-have-been.

Reagan borrowed our way out of that and we've been paying dearly since. It's kind of analogous the current situation with Obama *slowing* the loss of jobs only to be told that it's still fewer jobs so we should put the guys who accelerated our losses back into the driver seat.

Or, was it that he did not get the hostages out of Iran, that happened the minute Reagan was sworn into office and then the money used to keep our hostages there was found in Iran-Contra...

Or, was it that he did not take credit for Russia falling apart due to our more intelligent armaments, multiple warhead rockets, developed during Carter's time -- a president who understood diplomacy and a physicist that understood the rocket science of his era when it was needed.

Or, did you oppose the treaties he helped that stand to this day.

Just curious, what is the reason he disappointed you.

I had high hopes that he would disassociate the US from dictators around the world. He moved too slowly with that for my tastes. As I said above, looking back, i suspect he was dealing with an ostensibly Democratic Congress uninterested in rocking any boats. Think DLC on steroids.

the type of policies we associate with the DLC - failures to protect the middle class, failures to cut ties with Latin American dictators.
