history from my 1891 encyclopedia britannica-i hit quotes from the past for today.

Sugar was a diligent student of holy scripture. he was trusted adviser to louis VI + louis VII + by his conduct while regent for louis VII justified their trust, earned the name of pater patriœ. he left in his writings proof of his concern for the people + their wellbeing + their wretchedness under feudalism- one village, "under the lord's castle trodden down + as miserable as if it were under saracen oppression." + another "subject to 3 tillages- almost entirely destitute thru the rapacity of its masters." + another "so ravaged by the lord that it had to become utterly unfruitful + useless"; + in a 4th "the poor folk could scarce exist under the burden of so WICKED an oppression". under sugar prosperity came back partly; but he could not hinder the failure of the crusading king, whose career in the east was a discredit + calamity.

For whatever reason, the spelling of his name has changed since 1891 to Suger.

His main claim to fame now, such as it is, is as the first important patron (or inventor, depending upon whom you believe) of Gothic architecture.
