We ended up with an entire city poisoned and "emergency managers squandering school district and city money.

In business profit is the goal ... if you govern with "profit" as the only goal and not the welfare of citizens this is what you get.

The only purpose of a business is to make a profit. Governance is a completely different animal and they can't be managed in the same way.

Alas, no one has listened and it is still being shopped around as a profound statement.

The federal government will, unfortunately, be seeing a massive "brain drain" over the next (hoperfully only) 4 years. I don't even think that it was this bad under GWB. I mean, they put in cronies who didn't really believe in their agencies, but it still doesn't seem like it ever got like this. Certainly a RADICAL departure from the last 8 years.

10. I've never understood the calls to run government like a business.

The analogy breaks down immediately once you start asking yourself what role citizens play in the scheme. Are we customers? Shareholders? Board members? Employers? Employees?

According to conventional construction, the purpose of a business is to maximize profits.

According to the founders, the purpose of our constitution, and (by extension) the federal government is to:

establish justice,
insure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense,
promote the general welfare,
and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.

These goals are at odds with those of the business model. Whenever someone hands you the anodyne assertion that business people should run government the way businesses are run, challenge them. Make them defend the details. It's a debate that's over before its even begun.

I have put these points out to them and their only response is to look at me as if I have grown a second head. This attitude is part and parcel of trickle down so there is that.
