Congressman Denied the Right to Vote

&feature=player_embedded

Lincoln Davis, a former four-term congressman from Tennessee, was denied the right to vote in his hometown after poll workers said he had been purged from the voting rolls.

Voter suppression is a strategy to influence the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing people from exercising their right to vote.

Voter Suppression is a key GOP tactic http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-gop-war-on-voting-20110830

"I don't want everybody to vote," the influential conservative activist Paul Weyrich told a gathering of evangelical leaders in 1980. "As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

"After all, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar!"

The starry-eyed niceness and "golly, we have to respect every perspective, even the obviously wrong and fucked-up ones!" attitude of the Democratic party are why we keep losing ground. The archaic and futile quest for "bipartisanship" are what's causing what few successes we win to be smeared with far-right bullshit.

Basically, our party is still living in the Summer of Love and refuses to realize that the modern world needs them to be mean, hardassed motherfuckers willing to throw their "co-workers" out on their asses.

Naturally, some Democrats will wait until after they've been screwed out of the 2012 elections to consider issuing a "harshly worded statement."

However, upon consideration, senior Democrats will worry that the corporate news media will label them "sore losers" and decide to instead concentrate on "get out the vote" efforts.

Goins said this is how the error happened: Davis has homes in Fentress and Pickett counties. Davis cites his primary residence as Fentress for general voting purposes. He is also a property owner in Brydstown in Pickett County, where he can legally vote in city elections.

But Pickett County’s election administrator mistakenly listed Davis as a residence voter in that county. When purging duplicate registrations statewide, Goins said, because Pickett County listed Davis as a resident voter as did Fentress, state officials purged the older Fentress registration.

Davis, who showed up late in the day in Fentress, was told he couldn’t vote there. Goins said when Fentress County officials called him Tuesday, he got Davis’ number.

“So I called him ... and said, ‘Lincoln go vote [a provisional ballot]. We’ll work this out. If in fact, there’s an error on our side — and there has been — if in fact there’s an error on our side, we inform the local county and your vote will be counted.’ Of course, at this time, Lincoln — he didn’t want to go.”

you can't just be registered to vote in a county because you own property there.

Maybe for specific elections in which all property owners vote, but not otherwise.

In California, you have to register to vote in the county in which you live, and if you move, you have to re-register.

It seems really out of place to me to have a county employee simply moving the registration of a citizen. It's up to the citizen to state where he has his residence and to know where he should vote.

In other words, I think that is a lame excuse.
