Top House Democrats demand meeting with Homeland boss over Trump travel ban

Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Top House Democrats have demanded an emergency meeting with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly amid "chaos and confusion" caused by President Donald Trump's executive order restricting entry into the United States from seven countries.

Democrats also plan to introduce legislation as early as Monday to overturn the executive order signed Friday.

Separately, attorneys general in 15 states and the District of Columbia condemned the order as "unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful."

The Democrats' letter demanding the meeting by Wednesday with the Homeland Security secretary was signed by John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee; Bennie Thompson, D-Mass., ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee; Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., ranking member of the Foreign Affairs Committee; and Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security.
