Trumps supporters surely are pleased with his populist rhetoric and actions, and relieved that he is keeping his campaign pledges. But others, who opposed him or voted for him only because they disliked Hillary Clinton, will find his agenda and approach disturbing, even alarming, and they will likely turn out in November 2018.
Trumps fast start almost guarantees that the midterm will be about him about how comfortable voters are with his accomplishments. The more successful he is, the more easily his party will navigate those elections.
The presidents party has lost seats in 18 of the last 20 midterm elections, so it is likely that Democrats will gain House seats next year. How vulnerable will the GOP be? Much more than you think now.
Democrats need to gain 24 seats to win back the House a relatively large number given the way districts were drawn at the beginning of the decade. But if the outlook is challenging for Democrats, it certainly isnt impossible.
There are 27 Republican House members sitting in districts in which Mitt Romney drew less than 50 percent of the vote. In another 19 districts, Romney drew between 50 percent and 52 percent.

(252 posts)he is a loser, I hear Koch brothers already spending bucks of course. I also heard they did not back Trump, weird. Also read that Trump already registered that he is running for 2020, probably so he can already start getting campaign funds from anyone who wants to pay to play. With gerrymandering and voting machines that count in secret, we have to really come out it force to overcome stuff like that. Not to mention voter suppression, they are getting pretty aggressive as I am sure you noticed.

(58,660 posts)I know here in WA there are growing concerns. Our economy is based on Trade, Ag, High Tech. Trump has not been good for those so far. We have a couple of Tea Partiers that could be hurt by that movement receding.
The trick will be to get good candidates on ballots. Hopefully, the new DNC chair, whoever it is, can work some magic and get some names on tickets that can campaign and win. Recent demonstrations indicate that we could get the votes out, if we have the candidates.

(3,040 posts)The DNC and state Democratic parties need to stop giving up on red counties and districts. We need a 50 state initiative again and stop relying only on the coastal states and major cities.

(4,492 posts)I worked on a state leg race there last year, and was disappointed that WA-03 is still red (as was the leg race I worked on).
Another YUGE area of potential is New York. Trump flipped 6 congressional districts there and NY is a navy blue state that can give us some good pickups. There's a Long Island, Albany area, and Syracuse area district in play that I can think of.

(50,557 posts)That was (former House speaker deposed by Newt Gingrich) Tom Foley's district. It contains both Spokane and Pullman - the two closest things to liberal we have in Eastern Washington. AND its biggest industry is wheat growing - which is highly dependent on the export business Trump is doing his damndest to kill.
I would kinda like ID-1 (the last district in Idaho to send a Democrat to Washington) back, but that's not likely.
Else You Are Mad
(3,040 posts)Trump will be enough to overcome the gerrymandering of the last twenty years. If he fucks up enough -- which he already has -- the apathetic liberal voters, independents and moderate Republicans will come out en masse and vote for the Democratic candidates.
I have anecdotal evidence that this may be the case. My old boss that was staunchly anti-Obama went to the women's march and has denounced her being a Republican and said she will be voting straight Democratic party in 2018. I was shocked.

(4,492 posts)The best thing you can do right now is donate to your state Democratic Party. If the House is in play, this also means that many state legislatures are in play and your state party can help recruit candidates and lay the ground work now (even more urgent if you are in NJ or VA, who have state leg races this year).

(35,699 posts)The best thing for Ryan and the House Repubs would be to have Clinton to kick around, investigate and blame for not being able to repeal the ACA. Now they have Trump who is not going to march to their agenda but yet they will pay the price in 2018 for his failures. It is a beautiful thing.

(35,077 posts)We need to remember that. In other words, getting people elected and taking the House should be secondary.
Honestly, I don't have a lot of faith in the electoral system, but judging from what I've seen from the fury of these protests, I do have faith in the people.
