It is a 16 hour flight. People on his plane were detained and denied entry. When they took off, no one had any idea of what was coming. The inhumanity is just grotesque.
He was in Qatar for the International Model UN. More than 1,800 kids participated, most from the Middle East. All my son can talk about now is how kind and welcoming the people of Qatar and other Arabic nations are and his new friends from places like Qatar, Afghanistan and Syria.

(27,812 posts)It could have caused disruption on the flights. But from the point of view of the affected people, I can't say which would have been worse.

(1,288 posts)They have the worst "guest worker" practices. Read about all the laborers who come in from poor countries and how they're treated. Really awful. Not just Qatar, but most of the Gulf States.

(5,942 posts)My son also saw women in Burkas and men with multiple wives.
But, the kids were just kids whether they came from the US, Syria, Afghanistan or anywhere else. If us adults get out of the way and let kids grow up without prejudice, the world will improve dramatically.
Qatar + World Cup = slavery and death

(2,297 posts)I fly international and it is fairly common for me to clear customs in 15 minutes when other people on the flight are still waiting many hours later. It is essentially pre approval to clear customs on the return. I use a version of it (Nexus) when driving back from Canada and again we are talking 5 minutes vs 1-2 hours. If you drive to Mexico, get Sentri for the same advantage.
